This is a long-term project. You will be planning your vacation to a Spanish speaking country. This vacation will be for two weeks, and will need a lot of research so that you will have a once-in-a-lifetime vacation!

The project is divided into three parts. Each part will count as a test grade. [Three test grades in total.] If at any time you do not understand what you need to do, see me immediately.

Part I – Planning = TEST #1

A.  The Country - Choose the Spanish speaking country you wish to visit on this vacation. To do this, go onto the Internet and explore. Ask yourself the following questions:

§  Do I want a country in Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, South America, or North America? [Which is the Spanish speaking country in North America? By the way, the US is not a Spanish speaking country.]

§  Do I want to visit a country in the mountains or a country on the seashore?

§  Do I want a country with a rich indigenous history? [What does “indigenous” mean?]

§  Do I want a country with a unique natural environment?

***EACH STUDENT WILL DECIDE ON THEIR CHOICE AND TELL ME BY FRIDAY, APRIL 30TH. YOU MAY NOT CHOOSE THE SAME COUNTRY – EVERY STUDENT WILL WORK ON HIS OWN COUNTRY. ***

B.  Documents - When you travel to a foreign country, certain documents must first be completed:

1.  La visa – Complete the attached visa. Look up any unfamiliar vocabulary. As you can see, to complete this document, you must first decide on the country you are going to visit on vacation. (20 points)

2.  El pasaporte – Complete the attached passport document. To travel abroad, you need an American Passport [issued by the State Department.]

C.  Preparation for Travel –

1.  Hacer la maleta – Before leaving on a trip, one must pack a suitcase. What you take on your trip will depend on the climate and activities you plan to do.

**Title a separate piece of paper “Hacer la maleta.” On this paper

list ten (10) articles of clothing IN SPANISH and two (2) activity-related items IN SPANISH that you plan on packing for your trip. (Example: scuba gear, skis, tennis racket, golf) (20 points)

2.  El pasaje – Complete the attached “El pasaje” ditto: Master #9 will be completed by looking at Master #10. This exercise will help you understand the various methods of travel in and to a country. Look up any unfamiliar vocabulary. (20 points)

3.  El dinero – On a separate piece of paper, write the name of your country’s currency, and its value against the US dollar. The following information must be included: (20 points)

§  Name of currency

§  Value against US dollar

§  Date you looked this information up

§  Web site (or newspaper) you got this information from

Part II – Background and Historical Information = TEST #2

You are staying for two weeks. You want to know as much as possible about your country.

In a well-written paper include the following information about your country:

§  History : Two paragraphs about the history of your country (30 points)

§  Government: The type of government your country currently has. Include the name of the capital city and the name of the leader of the country. (20 points)

§  Economy: The economy of your country. Is it industrial, agricultural, a combination? What are the major imports and exports? Is the currency stable? (20 points)

§  Geography and Climate: Describe the type of geography and climate of your country. (20 points)

§  Places of Interest: List a minimum of five (5) places of interest a tourist like yourself would visit. (10 points)

§  Bibliography – List all sources you have used in your research. If this is not included, you will lose 40 points from your test score.

When you write this section, DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. USE YOUR OWN WORDS.

According to the dictionary, “plagiarism is the use of another person’s ideas or words, and passing them off as your own.” 100 points will be lost if you do plagiarize.

Part III – The Vacation!

This part will include several sections: your round trip flight, your itinerary, a map showing your route, the total cost of your vacation, and your conclusions about your vacation.

A.  Your round trip flight

Investigate on the Internet the airlines that fly to your country and the cost of a round trip ticket to your country. (10 points)

In Spanish write the following:

§  the name of the airline (if it indeed has a Spanish name)

§  the cost of the ticket – write the numbers out in Spanish

§  give the Spanish word for a “round trip ticket”

B.  Your itinerary

You are to visit five (5) places of interest. For each place you will visit include the following: (50 points)

§  The name of the place

§  Why you chose this place

§  The name of a hotel you will stay at and its cost [Do NOT invent this information. There is information available on the Internet about hotels in every place of interest you will visit.]

§  The activity or activities you will do while visiting this particular place. Find out if there is an entrance fee and include that fee.

§  How you will travel to the next destination in the country you are visiting.

C.  The map showing your route

Photocopy a map of your country, or print out a map from the Internet. On this map, draw [so it can clearly be seen] your route during this vacation. (10 points)

D.  Total Cost of Your Vacation

Itemize the cost of your vacation in US dollars: (10 points)

§  Airplane tickets

§  Hotels

§  Entrance Fees

§  Rental Cars or other transportation costs while in the country

§  Food Costs – Restaurants [In some cases this is included in the hotel cost.]

§  Spending money

E.  Your conclusions about your vacation

Write a paragraph explaining why or why not you would like to visit this country. Support your statement with facts from your “trip” there. A paragraph must have more than one sentence, and it must develop one idea. (20 points)
