* Idiom- an expression that cannot be understood from the individual meanings of the

words that make it up or by its literal meaning.

Ex.- Kaya was so nervous that her stomach was tied up in knots.

You can use clues from the sentence to understand the meaning of an idiom.

Homophones ; words that sound alike but are spelled differently and have different meanings. ex.-Spelling Words meet/meat rode/road be/bee

Grammar: Using a, an, and the

*The words a and an are special adjectives. Use a and an before nouns that name one.

* Use a before a noun that begins with a consonant sound. Use anbefore a noun that begins with

a vowel sound.

* The word the is also a special adjective. It points out a special noun or pronoun. You can use it

with one or more than one.

Ex.-Ted worked in the attic. He made a car with an engine.

Adjectives with –er and –est

*Add –er to adjectives to compare two people, animals, places, or things.

*Add –est to compare more than two people, animals, places, or things.

4. A French man named Toussaint Charbonneau won her as a result of a bet and later married her.

5. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark hired Charbonneau and Sacagawea the guide them westward.

6. Sacagawea had family out west.

7. Just before the expedition began, Sacagawea gave birth to a son.

8. She carried the baby on her back during the entire journey--both directions.

9. Her Shoshone relatives provided them with supplies and safe passage through their lands.

10. Sacagawea is thought to have died of fever in 1812.
