CONNECTION TO THE SCHOOL DAY - MATH

STEP Up staff will incorporate math into the STEP Up program and support the core math curriculum. To show the effect of our program on student growth, a pre-test is given to every student to establish what they know now (base level) on entry. Staff will provide math support throughout the program and periodically measure how well students are doing.

SCORING THE MATH SKILLS GRADE LEVEL CHECK

oStudent math skills checks are hand scored by staff, high school volunteers and/or responsible 7th and 8th grade students.

oIf 7th and 8th graders correct the math skills checks, do not allow them to correct their grade level. These are corrected by staff.

RECORD KEEPING for PRE/POST CHECKS

oRecord all student scores electronically on the Math Pre/Post Data Sheet (Staff may record scores by hand on an adaptedSnack Attendance Sheet for their group)

oFile all student Math Skills Grade Level Checksheets, by group, for future reference.

oWhenever a new student enters the program, they must be given the appropriate Math Skills Grade Level Check. Include the date the new student took the test.

Procedure for Giving the Pre/Post-Math Skills Check

  • Explain to the students the activity they are going to do is to show us what they know about numbers, math, and how to do math activities.
  • They are to do their best and do their own work. If they don’t know how to do something, they should do their best or go on to the next problem.
  1. Pass out the math skills check and a pencil to each child.
  2. Direct students to put their name and date on their paper. Check to see that each child has done this.
  3. Tell students how much time they have to complete the test.
  4. Start the time.
  5. Let the students know when they have one minute.
  6. At the end of the time tell the students to put down their pencils and turn their paper over
  7. Pick up their papers. .
  8. Thank the students for working hard and showing us what we need to do to support their learning math.

Procedure for Grading the Pre/Post Math Skills Check

Staff GRADES Pre/Post Math Skills Check

  • Collect each student paper
  • Make sure every sheet has a name and date.
  • Use the answer key to correct the paper, marking a √ for correct and circling incorrect answers
  • Record the number correct in the upper right hand corner.
  • Give all the students’ papers to the Program Facilitator
  • The Program Facilitator will assure that all students’ scores are entered electronically on the Math Pre/Post Data Sheet.

CHECKING PAPERS – Minute Math Drills
