TESTING FOR APPRENTICESHIP
BIW tentatively plans to offer testing for Manufacturing and Design Apprentice in February 2018.
Testing for the Apprenticeship Program is typically held at the Employee Development Center (EDC), 520 Washington Street, Bath, Maine. The EDC is located across the street from the South Gate. There is very limited parking available in the rear of the building so applicants should either arrange for drop-off or be prepared to arrive early enough to find parking and walk to the building.
We no longer use high school or college transcripts to pre-screen apprenticeship program applicants.
All applicants are required to take three pre-screening tests which are proctored by BIW training department personnel using ACT’s rigid testing specifications. These WorkKeys Assessment tests make up the ACT National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC).
The tests cover the following three specific areas: Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information and Locating Information. The tests are in a multiple choice, pencil and paper format similar to SAT’s or ASVAB tests you may have taken in high school or with the military. There is a 45 minute time limit for each exam with a 10 minute break between exams.
Non BIW-employees will be required to pay the testing fee at the time of the test. The fee is the cost BIW pays to have the exams corrected and scored by ACT and is payable by check or money order only. The testing fee will be reimbursed if you are hired in to the apprenticeship program.
Valid photo ID’s are required for identification purposes and BIW employees should have their badge to avoid the testing fee.
The testing time will be 2 hours and 15 minutes. Additional time will be required to fill in the required personal information on the tests and to provide instruction. The total time commitment will be approximately 3 ½ hours.
Formula sheets and calculators are allowed for the Applied Mathematics tests and they will be provided by BIW. All other electronic devices must be turned off and stored out of sight.
