The 2017 Claisebrook Challenge

A 12km paddle up the Swan River to Claisebrook Cove and back.

All proceeds to Telethon.

9am Sunday 10th September 2017

Meeting Area:

Free parking is provided at the Maylands Sport and Rec Centre, 50 Clarkson Rd., Maylands. There will be marshals in Pirate uniforms to direct you from there.

When:

9.00am: Crews have arrived and set up boats and equipment.

9:30am: A safety briefing will be held on the foreshore for all competitors.

10:00am: The first team in the Claisebrook Challenge will be let go.

The race should take around one to one and a half hours, and will be followed by a BBQ and drinks at the fabulous Maylands Sport and Recreation Club.

The Course:

This event involves a 12 km race (approx.) from the Perth Pirates’ Maylands foreshore into Claisebrook Cove and back.

Participating boats will be let go at approximately 2 minute intervals. The start of the race will be with the nose of the boat on land with all crew in the boat ready to go. The starter will call the start, at which time a time and date stamped photo will be taken and the teams will reverse out from the bank and turn to head downstream.

Once on the water, the teams are to head down river towards Claisebrook Cove obeying all boating rules along the way.

Upon entering Claisebrook Cove the sweeps are to steer their boat to the marked jetty and bring the boat to a complete stop. One of the strokes will collect a single flag from the marshal which they need to carry back to the finish line. No one is to exit the boat whilst in Claisebrook Cove unless in an emergency.

The boats are then to make their way back to Maylands again obeying all boating rules along the way.

The end of the race involves the sweep bringing the boat to a complete stop at the jetty opposite the starting point. A stroke will then hand the flag to the finishing marshal at which time another time and date stamped photo will be taken.

Once this has been done, the crew is to safely paddle their boat across the river to the starting position and carry the boat out onto the grass as directed by the marshals. The crew will then take the boat back to the Maylands Sport and Rec lawned area for cleaning.

Crew Composition:

Any member of DBWA is eligible to participate – this ensures that paddlers are covered by insurance.

For safety reasons, logistics and boat speed across such a long distance, a maximum of 16 paddlers per boat are allowed.

Entrant Eligibility:

Crew members must be 12 years or over and in general good health.

Makeup of the Crew:

We are offering one race category, being Open Crews (i.e. 16 paddlers, any mix of men and women). Any gender of sweep. The sweep can also swap with any paddler, so long as at any one time an accredited sweep is at the helm.

Boats and equipment: We hope to have enough boats to cater for all comers but depending on demand we may request some metro clubs to supply their own boats.

Crews may take ‘support items’ on the boat, such as drinks, food, and spare clothing (especially if it is cold/wet), but it is recommended to keep these to a minimum and to train with these items so as to understand how they may interfere with safe paddling.

Safety: A rescue boat will be following the fleet. The rescue boat will not carry your spare water and food. Crews must take adequate water and food on their dragon boat and consider medications that might be needed for anyone with medical conditions (e.g. diabetes, heart conditions, asthma etc).

Should there be inclement weather, then the event organizers will decide between postponing the race start to later in the day or canceling the event entirely (i.e. Heading to the bar and luncheon early!)… SO STILL ARRIVE AT THE ALLOCATED START TIME. Rain and cold weather alone will not stop the event, but obviously excessive wind and lightning will.

There is a ski area along the way. A more detailed map will be provided at the 9:30 am safety briefing meeting on the day.

Rules:

  1. There must be a maximum of 16 paddlers in a boat.
  2. There is to be no interference between boats to and from Claisebrook Cove.
  3. The boat entering Claisebrook Cove first has right of way to the jetty.
  4. There can only be one boat at the jetty at a time. If there is a boat already collecting a flag at Claisebrook Cove or handing off a flag at the finishing jetty, the trailing boat must queue.
  5. Boats must come to a complete stop at the jetty in Claisebrook Cove before the marshal will hand the flag to one of the strokes.
  6. The flag must be collected promptly and once collected, the boat must move off immediately.
  7. There is to be no interference to the flags at the jetty other than to collect one for your boat from the marshal.
  8. Boats must come to a complete stop at finishing jetty in Maylands before the marshal will collect the flag from one of the strokes.
  9. All boating rules must be followed.
  10. You must follow any directions from marshals both on land and water.
