  • ACMMG108:[2]Choose appropriate units of measurement for length, area, volume[3], capacity[4] and mass
  • ACMMG109:[5]Calculate the perimeter[6] and area of rectangles using familiar metric units

Resources required

  • Conservation International – Frogs[7](4 minutes) and How to Make a Frog Pond[8](90 seconds) captioned online videos, plus facilities to view them.
  • Math workbooks
  • Student worksheets[9]
  • Drawing equipment
Lesson outline:
  1. Teacher explains that the amphibian family is in threat of extinction worldwide due to pollution and loss of habitat, then shows the captioned video, Conservation International - Frogs (4 minutes).
  2. Teacher sets class a challenge to design a conservation frog pond. Teacher shows captioned video, How to Make a Frog Pond (90seconds) and students are given an equipment list and budget table. Students have $900 to spend on materials.
  3. Teacher demonstrates how graph is to be used. Each square on grid represents 1 square metre - students must apply all mathematical knowledge to this project.
  4. Students can work as individuals or in pairs to design a garden and ensure it costs less than $900.
  5. Teacher demonstrates how to complete the budget form - a completed example is left on display to assist students.
  6. Teacher outlines that the client (Mr Frog) is looking for creative and colourful gardens - they must be natural and safe.
  7. When returning plans and paperwork students are reminded to ensure all calculations are checked.
  8. Students are given all paperwork. They return to their desk and begin work. Students should be allocated time to plan, implement, and review their design. Additional time will be needed for budgeting and calculation.
  9. Students should be given opportunity to share their designs with class or other working groups.
