Relevant Experience

2004-Present: Freelance Translator, in combination with various other part-time jobs, including teaching English as a foreign language and various roles in the charity sector. I work for agencies, individuals and internet clients.

2002-2004: Translator / European Language Abstractor, TheFinancial Times. Working as part of the Content Creation team, my duties were to select relevant stories from the European press (French and Spanish newspapers) and then summarise them into snappy English articles for inclusion on the FT’s website. As well as the core translation work, I also checked and subedited other colleagues’ work, compiled glossaries and conducted research for the rest of the team.

2000: Researcher, Media Information, Chesham. Using my research and foreign language skills, my job was to gather contacts and information for the company’s media directories. This involved conducting telephone interviews in French, Spanish and German, visiting company websites, and using email and fax to contact professionals in the sector.

1997 – 1999: Teacher of English as a foreign language at Mayfield Academy, Brighton. Working with groups of mostly adult students from all over the world and with ages between 15 and 70 – often in the same class! During my time at the school, I taught all levels, from beginners to advanced, and particularly enjoyed making my own teaching materials and conducting debates.

Education

2000 – 2001: University of Kent at Canterbury. MA: Applied Languages: Vocational Techniques for the Career Linguist. Awarded: Distinction. Modules included Translation, Interpreting and Computer-aided language learning. My dissertation, on the problems involved in the translation of Zen haiku poetry, was awarded a first.

1997: St Giles College, Brighton. Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA). Awarded: Grade B.

1994 – 1997: Plymouth University. Bsc Hons: Psychology with Modern Languages (French and Spanish) Awarded: 2:1. Modules included: Educational Psychology, Environmental Psychology, Discourse Analysis, French and Spanish literature, and Translation. My dissertation, ‘An Analysis of Religious Language’, was awarded a First.

1993 – 1994: University of Barcelona. Diploma in Spanish Languages and Culture.

1987 – 1993: Dr Challoner’s Grammar school, Bucks. A levels: French B; Spanish B; Art C; Business Studies D. GCSE's: 5 A's, 4 B's and one C.

Computer and Office Skills

I am fully conversant with most of the major software packages and frequently use the Internet for research purposes. I am also a fairly fast touch typist.

Language Skills

I am fluent in French, Spanish and Portuguese, and am also comfortable conversing in German and, to a lesser extent, Italian and Japanese. Over the last few years, I have also collected various bits of many other languages, including those acquired on foreign travels.

Interests

I have very diverse interests, including music, psychology, oriental religions and philosophy, the environment and ecological issues and alternative health and holistic healing systems.

I am a keen traveller and in the last ten years my adventures have included crewing on a yacht across the Atlantic, canoeing down the Orinoco Delta, travelling overland to India and crossing the mountains of northern Pakistan on horseback.
