Keeping the Peace: Mapping and Analyzing Canada’s Peacekeeping Operations

Since its inception in 1945, Canada has played a significant role in the United Nations. Over the years, Canada has made vital contributions towards creating world peace by participating in numerous peacekeeping missions abroad.

PART 1: Annotated Map (Communication)

Canadian peacekeepers have been involved in missions all over the world. Using the attached map of the world, complete the following:

o  Shade and label 8 countries of your choice from the list of past operations. Identify the year under the country label.

o  Shade and label 10 current operations on the map. Identify the year as you did above.

o  Shade and label 4 countries where you believe future peacekeeping operations may develop.

o  Create an appropriate title for you map. Think about what your map is showing.

o  Remember your mapping skills (border, north arrow, source, legend, title and name in bottom right corner).

Sample of countries where Canada has sent peacekeeping forces in the past:

PART 2: Map Analysis (Thinking)

Use your map to complete the analysis questions. Write your answers in your notebook and use proper sentences.

1.  Identify any patterns that exist on your map. Use your geographic terminology to describe the patterns you notice.

2.  Why do you think Canada plays such an important and active role in the developing world? Offer at least three suggestions.

3.  Do you believe Canada’s involvement in UN peacekeeping operations is positive for our nation? Explain.

4.  In your opinion, do you think Canada has a responsibility to help countries experiencing serious conflict, poverty and/or war? Why or why not? If not, what do you think Canada’s peacekeeping role should be? Explain your opinion.

5.  Explain why you chose your four “future locations” where peacekeeping operations may be needed. What is the current situation in these countries and why do you foresee the need for outside intervention?
