Congratulations! You are scholastically eligible to become a member of Glen Este High School’s National Honor Society. Candidates will be reviewed based on the four pillars upon which NHS was founded: character, scholarship, leadership and service.
Membership in the Glen Este High School National Honor Society is a “privilege bestowed by the school upon those students who are found to meet the criteria for selection” (NHS Handbook).
Each candidate is considered separately and new members are selected based on their having demonstrated sufficient service, leadership and character to verify that they meet the chapter standards. The best source for accurate information regarding a candidates experience is the individual candidate. (NHS Handbook)

If you would like to be considered for membership, please begin by completing the candidate form. This form must be completed and handed in with the necessary information to Mrs. Dohrmann by 2:30pm on Wednesday, October 30. (This deadline is FINAL.) We request that the forms be submitted by this date to provide the Faculty Council sufficient time to authenticate the information provided by the candidates and to seek clarification in preparation for the selection meeting.
Selection Process Overview
1)Students are notified of academic eligibility
- 3.5 or higher for the 2013-2014 school year
- 3.75 or higher (per a Faculty Councilvote in October of 2013) for the 2014-2015 school year and beyond;
2)Candidates have an opportunity to ask the chapter advisor questions and request clarification of forms included in the candidate information packet;
3)Candidates are given time to ask questions about the requirements/ expectations of the Athenian Chapter;
4)Students complete candidate forms and give to chapter advisor on or before deadline;
5)Faculty members are asked to evaluate those students they know well based on the four pillars of the Honor Society (character, service, leadership, and scholarship);
6)The Faculty Council meets and reviews candidate information packets and faculty evaluations;
7)As the national constitution notes, candidates are selected when they receive a majority vote of the Faculty Council;
8)Students are notified of selection/ non-selection in a timely fashion (preferably within twoweeks of collection of Faculty Evaluation forms).
Membership Obligations and Chapter Events
1)Maintain standards set forth by the Honor Society upon selection;
2)Participate in bi-weekly meetings;
3)Generate ideas for service projects for the betterment of the school and community
4)Volunteer time to organizations in need in order to fulfill service requirement (10 hours/ quarter);
5)Implement various group projects for philanthropic purposes throughout the course of the school year;
6)All students will pay $10 in dues within 30 days of selection.

You should include a one page typedessay describing why you would like to join the National Honor Society at GEHS. (You can staple this page to the back of the candidate information packet once completed.) Please be sure to include what you feel you could contribute to the group by considering three of the four pillars upon which the National Honor Society was founded: character, leadership and service. (You do not have to include scholarship in your essay as you have already met the academic requirements.) The pillars are described below in detail. Please take this opportunity to review these depictions and assess your own abilities in each of the threeareas.
