img src=http://www.nwlink.com/~holben/advertlongines2.jpg> Founded by Ernest Francillon and Auguste Agassiz in the year 1832, the Longines Watch Co. of Switzerland was established in the Long Meadows (translated: Longines) near the town of St. Imier. Winner of countless horology awards, their wristwatches are among the best in the world, on par with the major players of the Swiss watch making profession including its chief rival Omega.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following exceptionally designed vintage Longines timepiece, a men’s 14kt Solid Yellow Gold model that dates to ca 1948. This fancy Knotted Lug model is in excellent condition, a striking mid century model that I have NEVER seen before. Yes, I have had other knotted lug case watches but this one has a guilloche, engraved bezel with Four 4 genuine diamonds set at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 positions – truly striking in appearance.
Triple-signed, it measures 40mm lug tip to lug tip and 29.5mm in width (31mm with winding crown). This works out to be just shy of 1-5/8 inches long by 1-3/16 inches wide without the crown, a smaller size gents watch also suited to a woman’s wrist (by today’s larger standards). It is powered by its original 17 jewel, 22L caliber manual wind Longines mechanism that has been fully serviced by my watchmaker David prior to auction, ensuring it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The silver, enamel finished dial is in immaculate condition, the original dial that has been professionally restored to its correct appearance and very nicely done. It features a 60 minute outer track border, original gold metal hands and a sub-seconds dial with ‘sweep’ gold seconds hand.. Signed LONGINES below the 60 minute marker and SWISS at the base of the dial, below the seconds dial.
The new acrylic crystal is in mint condition with no flaws, removed in some photos to avoid glare. The case is a two-piece design that is 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold and it is in excellent PLUS condition, complete with fancy knotted and curled lugs and an incised, guilloche bezel with engraved hour markers and 4 Genuine Diamonds, all securely set. The yellow gold finished winding crown, unmarked, is in excellent order, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I find that the 14k solid gold back lid is in MINT shape with no wear or engravings, past or present. Looking inside I find a clean and fully serviced manual wind mechanism, signed Longines Watch Co., Swiss, Seventeen 17 Jewels [Grade] 22L, LXW with serial number #7,570,823. This serial number dates the watch to circa 1948 as per available production records. The inside case is stamped LONGINES WITTNAUER WATCH CO. INC., NEW YORK, GENEVA, MONTREAL, K&L, 14K GOLD with case number below.
This fine watch has been cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. Comes fitted with a new 16mm black deBeer Paris hand finished lizard (grain) calf leather strap with matching gold finished buckle. All in all an excellent condition fancy CASE, fancy LUGS Longines watch. They are not making them like this anymore so when you find superior example you should hold on to it – enjoy owning and wearing it as it steadily appreciates in value.p<ulli>Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. img src=http://www.nwlink.com/~holben/advertomega2.jpg> Among watch collectors, the Omega Watch Co. of Switzerland, a firm founded by Louis Brandt of Biel in 1848, is one of the most renowned brands of timepieces. In 1894 a new caliber bore the name of Omega for the first time, and since then it has produced some of the finest caliber wristwatches money can buy. Omega is my favorite Swiss watch firm as well, combining those qualities of name brand recognition, high quality and (comparative) value that are important to the seasoned watch collector.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage Ladymatic model from the firm, a 14K Solid White Gold self-winding timepiece that dates to 1966 and in excellent PLUS condition. This automatic wind model is quadruple-signed for Omega - on the dial, winding crown, movement and case.
It measures 24mm lug tip to lug tip and 17mm in width (18.5mm with original Omega-signed crown). This equates to 1 inch in length by 5/8 of an inch wide, not counting the winding crown. It is fitted on a black crocodile grain Kreisler leather strap that will fit a wrist 5-1/4 inches to 6-1/2 inches in size. If you need a longer strap email me and I will check my inventory for a longer alternative. It has been fully serviced by my longtime watchmaker David just last week and its original rotor automatic caliber 660 Omega mechanism winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The silver, enamel finished dial is in excellent shape, the original that has been professionally restored to its correct status. It features applied white gold hour markers and original black lacquer finish Baton style hands. Signed OMEGA below the 12 marker with applied silver Omega logo. It is further signed Ladymatic above the 6 marker.
The original faceted edge acrylic crystal is in excellent condition, adding an extra sparkle to the watch. The two-piece case is 14 Karat Solid White Gold and in excellent PLUS condition, absolutely no wear. The original Omega-signed winding crown is in excellent order too, operating as it should.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid has a finely brushed, satin finish and stamped 14K GOLD. It is excellent like the rest of the watch. Inside I find a clean 17 Jewel, rotor automatic rose gold colored movement that is signed Omega Watch Co., Swiss, Seventeen 17 Jewels, [Caliber] 660/b>. The serial number of #23,332,901 dates this watch to ca 1966 as per company production records available online. The inside of the back lid is stamped OMEGA WATCH CO., ROSS, SS5740 with case number below. The Ross name is for the case maker and SS5740 is the Omega watch model number.
This fully serviced (disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated) watch winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new (old stock) 8mm Kreisler crocodile (grain) calf leather strap with matching color buckle.
So then, have I interested anyone in this beautiful, original, mid century solid gold Omega? The Ladymatic models have always been popular with collectors and the new owner should enjoy a great investment along with wearing a great watch.p<ulli>Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers.
