Pre-Prep/Kindergarten in state schools in identified Indigenous communities

Pre-preparatory learning (pre-Prep/kindergarten) is a play-based early childhood education program delivered within a culturally competent environment. The program aims to bridge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children’s home experiences with experiences they will have in school, by supporting children to be strong in the culture of their family and as participants in the wider world. A quality pre-Prep/kindergarten program is built upon a strong relationship with children’s parents, their family and community.
This form is to be read in conjunction with the Application to register a child in a pre-preparatory learning program in a Queensland state school formthatoutlines the responsibilities of all parties to ensure they understand how the pre-Prep/kindergarten program operates within the school, what the children will be doing in pre-Prep/kindergarten, and how the program builds strong partnerships. The school may provide other detailed written information about pre-Prep/kindergartenwith this registration information sheet in a form that is accessible to parents. All parties should work with each other to provide theirchild with a quality early childhood education.
Responsibility of parents to:
- work in partnership with pre-Prep/kindergartenservice staff to ensure the best outcomes for yourchild
- visit yourchild in pre-prep, participate in family activities and attend parent information sessions
- let the pre-Prep/kindergartenservice teacher know if there are any problems that may affect yourchild’s active participation in the program
- notify the school if your child has any medically-diagnosed conditions and associated medication, medical aids/devices or health procedures to follow, and/orany medically-diagnosed severe allergies
- remove your child from the pre-Prep/kindergarten program if they suddenly become ill, and keep them at home while they are suffering from infections or contagious illnesses (e.g. measles, mumps, chickenpox, influenza)
- notify the pre-Prep/kindergarten service teacher promptly of any absences
- accompany your childwhen travelling to and from the pre-Prep/kindergarten premises, until a pre-Prep/kindergarten service staff member receives your child and records their arrival/departure in the attendance book
- advise thepre-Prep/kindergarten service teacher of alltravel arrangements for your child and any changes if you cannot accompany your child to and from the pre-Prep/kindergarten premises
- inform the pre-Prep/kindergarten service teacherof any current family court orders concerning the welfare, safety or parenting arrangements of your child
- keep the pre-Prep/kindergarten service staff informed of any changes to your child’s details, such as their home address and phone number.
Responsibility of pre-Prep/kindergarten servicestaff to:
- provide apre-Prep/kindergarten program which aligns with theNational Quality Frameworkfor early childhood education and care, the Pre-Prep/Kindergartenin state schools in identified Indigenous communitiesprocedure,related Handbook for Services (authorised DoE employees only) and other relevant policies and procedures
- inform and discuss the pre-Prep/kindergarten program and the learning entitlements of all children with the parents. The discussion must include:
confirmation that the parents have visited the pre-Prep/kindergarten service
the process of registrationof the child in the pre-Prep/kindergarten program
the child’s strengths, as well as any known impairments that may impact upon the child’s participation in the pre-Prep/kindergarten program
what can be expected if the child participates in a pre-Prep/kindergarten program
the importance of the child’s regular attendance and benefits of the pre-Prep/kindergarten program
the importance of family participation in the pre-Prep/kindergarten activities and what parents can do to support the child’s participation in pre-prep.
- take reasonable steps to ensure the safety, happiness and self-confidence of all pre-Prep/kindergarten children
- contact parents as soon as possible if the school is concerned about the child’s participation in the pre-Prep/kindergarten program due to concerns regarding health and wellbeing
- seek emergency medical assistance for a child as required without seeking further authorisation from a parent/carer in the case of an emergency including those emergencies relating to asthma and anaphylaxis, for example, referring the child to a medical practitioner, hospital or ambulance service, including ambulance or other appropriate transport, if immediate but non-life threatening treatment is required and if parents/carers or authorised persons cannot be contacted. In some circumstances a person nominated by the Principal/Head of Campus may be required to transport the child to receive medical treatment
- develop each child’s talents as fully as possible by maintaining high expectations for all children
- inform the parents regularly about the child’s achievements and participation in the pre-Prep/kindergarten program
- be open and welcoming,keep communication lines free, and offer opportunities for parents to become involved in the pre-Prep/kindergarten community
- clearly articulate the school’s expectations regarding the child’s behaviour and dress style
- assureparents that confidentiality will be maintained at all times
- adviseparents of the school’s record-keeping policy, insurance arrangements and accident cover for pre-Prep/kindergarten children
- advise parents of any extra-curricular activities operating at the school in which the child may become involved
- deal with complaints in an open, fair and transparent manner
- consult parents on any major issues affecting pre-Prep/kindergarten children.
