Key Purpose of Role

The purpose of the Family Support Worker is to bea flexible and supportive member of staff who can assist in the effective daily management of the needs of individual pupils and their families. The nature of the role is such that self-motivation is crucial to success.

The Family Support Worker will to work alongside teaching staff, parents and pupils. The underpinning value of the work is to ensure that every pupil achieves their potential through the provision of targeted support and intervention, working with the Headteacher and SENDCo, they will contribute to all aspects of pupils’ well-being and achievement.

The Family Support Worker will work as part of a team line managed by the SENDCo. The role will involve a mixture of dealing with parents, with pupils’ behavioural and attendance issues and intervening with difficulties around the school. This will involve time in the Birdhouse and time working with identified individuals on a range of issues.

Core Responsibilities

be the first point of contact for pupils and families when personal matters affect learning

work with agencies in school and beyond to support pupils and families

follow school safeguarding procedures and inform the Designated Safeguarding Lead/Headteacher about issues affecting pupil progress and well-being

Specific Responsibilities

ensure effective communication with pupils and Parents/Carers, especially for hard-to-reach families

listen and talk, as a mentor, with any child who is experiencing a difficulty affecting them emotionally, physically, psychologically or socially

help to overcome barriers to learning in whatever form they may take to assist pupils to reach their individual potential

work closely with the school nurse and other outside agencies in order to provide support and advice for the whole family on a range of issues or to signpost to support

look at the family from the inside out, to understand its dynamics and to offer practical help and support

be persistent, assertive and challenging in order to get the services the family need. This could involve assisting the SENDCo in making referrals, working with the family

provide a hub/Parent Support Centre which parents can access for support

liaise with other agencies to enable parenting support groups to be signposted

facilitate essential 1:1 time for pupils and parents to have in school to support the stability of the home environment

assist SENCo in taking necessary action and intervention as a result of work with SENDCo to formulate and deliver interventions based on need

feedback and liaise with Senior Leadership Team (SLT), Parents and Teachers where applicable
