SHELL STITCH BABY AFGHAN

To Make:

Using M.C. yarn, ch. 138 sts. (plus 56 sts. for Baby Crib) (for larger increase always

By of 8 sts.)

CHANGE COLOUR:

Row 1: Sc. in 2nd ch. from hook, *skip 3 ch., 9 dc. in next ch., skip 3 ch., sc. in next sc.; rep.

from * across. Now begin working 2 rows in each colour beg. with C.C.1. (First time

change colour.)

Row 2: Ch. 2, (on hook draw up a loop in next st.) in each of next 4 sts. – 5 loops through all

5 loops, ch.1 (for eye of half shell), *ch.3, sc. in next dc., ch.3, (draw up a loop in next

st.,) in each of next 9 sts., yo. and draw through all 10 loops on hook, ch.1 (for eye of

shell); rep. from * across, ending last rep. (draw up a loop in next dc.) in each of next

5 sts., yo. draw through all 6 loops on hook, ch.1 (for eye of half shell), turn.

Row 3: Ch.3, 4 dc. in eye of half shell, sc. in next sc. * 9 dc. in eye of next shell, sc. in sc.;

rep. from across, ending 5 dc. in eye of last half shell.

CHANGE COLOUR:

Row 4: Ch.1, sc. in first dc., * ch.3, (draw up a loop in next st.) in each of next 9 sts., yo.,

draw through all 10 loops, ch.1 (for eye of shell), ch.3, sc. in next st; rep. from * to

end, turn.

Row 5: Ch.1, * sc. in sc., 9 dc. in eye of next shell; rep. from * across, ending sc. in last st.

Piece should measure 3 in. (7.5 cm.) from beginning. Continue working 2 rows with

each colour, rep. rows 2-5 for pattern until the 11th M.C. stripe has been worked. (Or

length you want.)

DO NOT BREAK YARN. Continue in M.C. working around rem. 3 sides of afghan

of border, working 9 dc. in eye of shells and 1 sc. between shells. Break yarn and

fasten off.
