QUESTLAB NETWORK – DIGITAL PARTNERSHIP ADVISOR

Studio Wayne McGregor is seeking an individualwith extensive knowledge and contacts in the technology and digital sector to work with them on the development of QuestLab Network, a new project funded by the Arts Council England’s Ambition for Excellence Programme.QuestLab Network will bring together dance artists with a network of world-class researchers, developers, technologists and commercial organisations, creating new partnerships that will lead to the development and delivery of performance and engagement projects around the country.

Studio Wayne McGregoris the creative engine for choreographer and directorWayne McGregor CBE, and the home of his life-long enquiry into thinking through and with the body. It is a nexus of partners who explore movement, artistry, thought and partnership. With Wayne at its centre, this collaborative network encompasses dancers, writers, composers, producers, software engineers, visual artists, scientists and more.
Studio Wayne McGregor fuels the breadth of Wayne’s creative work including the development and touring of signature works on his ensemble of world-class dancers,Company Wayne McGregor; a portfolio of international commissions across genres including dance, visual arts, film, theatre and opera; specialised learning and engagement programmes emboldening individuals in their own creative expression; mentoring and cultivating of other artists; and inquisitive research enterprises which look across science, technology and the arts to provoke questions about some of the extraordinary phenomena of physical thinking.

QuestLab Network

The project will run over two years, with eight artists participating each year. Selected artists will demonstrate curiosity and ambition for developing their own creative practice through collaborating with a range of technology partners working in the domains of VR, AR, AI and robotics.

In each year there will be a two-week residency at Studio Wayne McGregor, which will be curated to mix the participating artists with a diverse range of individuals and companies involved in technology, digital practice and scientific research with an interest in working with artists. During this two-week intensive residency, and at additional network events through the year, each artist will gain insight, build partnerships and networks, and germinate ideas for practical projects they are interested in pursuing.

Following the residency, the eight artists and their technology partners will have the opportunity to pitch an idea to develop into a creative output. Fourideas will be selected to be developed further. Development of the selected projects will supported through studio time and seed funding. Each of the projects will be designed to be delivered or disseminated in the artists’ home region, focusing on broadening engagement, reaching new audiences, or investigating a particular need in the artists’ own areas.

Consultancy brief

  • To nurture and developpartnerships with current Studio Wayne McGregor digital partners in relation to participation in 2018 and 2019 residencies
  • To use own networks to introduce other digital and technology partners for involvement in the programme
  • To secure in kind support for the programme from digital and technology partners in relation to their participation in the residency programme
  • To curate the residency programme in collaboration with the Project Director
  • To develop content for residency sessions in collaboration with digital partners and the Project Director
  • To facilitate residency sessions
  • To be part of the panel to select artist projects for support and development

Person specification

  • Highly developed professional networks in the digital sector
  • Facilitation skills
  • Experience of curating and managing training courses or conferences is desirable
  • An interest in and knowledge of the arts sector and art/tech collaborations is desirable

Contract details

Timeline:Year 1: June - November2018

QuestLab Network is a two-year project. This is an initial contract for year 1 of the project with the possibility to extend to Year 2.

The fee covers 20 – 25 days, which includes the project development, some attendanceat the Studio Wayne McGregor residency (October 22 – November 2 2018) and the pitch sessions (26 – 27 November 2018 tbc). Please outline in the application your daily rate or number of days you would propose to fulfil the brief.

Fee: £6000 inc VAT (no expenses payable).

It is expected that the consultant will work remotely or at the Studio Wayne McGregor offices.
