Conference 2007

Prizes Conquer Zero Nominations

Jim Butler – Awards Committee Chair

That’s right – PRIZES! Okay, maybe the headline is a little wishful thinking but I would like to think of it as a prediction for the next twenty days. As I write this, there are no, zero, zip, nominations for the Excellence in Service, Meritorious Achievement, Outstanding Attorney, or Excalibur awards. That’s not totally unheard of at this time of year but it is a concern.

For the last three years, the number of nominations has been trending downward. I cannot believe it’s because there are no awesome heroes in the field. Contact me at or any of the other board members on your opinion about why. If things need to be changed, we’ll do it.

And in that spirit, the awards committee has chosen to give two random nominators a $20 Kroger/King Soopers/City Market gift card. We realize keeping nose down in the daily grind makes it difficult to observe and recall the excellence our peers have exhibited throughout the year. Perhaps this incentive will free the mind to put in that little extra effort to nominate the best of the best. Yes, that could be you.

It’s easy. Go to or follow the award menu options from the CFSC home page and complete all eight questions for one of the awards. Obviously, for the mercenary in each of us, the last question on who is making the nomination is the most critical. There are hints and sample speeches to give you ideas on the awards menu.

P.S. For those of you a total gambling geek like me, last year there were 15 nominations which would have given you better odds than winning a free scratch ticket. But as my financial advisor tells me, past performance does not guarantee future returns.

Online Registrations

Jim Butler – Historian/Webmaster

Elsewhere in this newsletter you will receive a bunch of information on the upcoming conference in Vail. I would like to encourage you to register online using the registration link in the left margin of our website’s home page at According to our treasurer and registration chairperson, the online entry you do saves them significant time in their volunteer duties.

Some of you have had problems registering online this year. Because of problems at our hosting site with the email server, some email confirmations have not gone through. We have double-checks in place to try to be as accurate as possible in compiling our registration list. The email is sent after the registration is posted. Our treasurer and registration chairperson have the same access as you to the membership list on the Members menu on the website. The moment you register, you become a member for the 2007-2008 term. And, of course, the treasurer will receive your registration fees as the ultimate proof of your registration.

So, even if you get a weird error message at the top of your confirmation page immediately after registering, don’t worry – you’re registered. If you don’t get the confirmation page or don’t see your name in the membership list on the Member menu, send an email directly to me at . And if you do get an error message, copy and paste it into the email if possible.

How to Run a Successful 2-Point Conversion and Other Important Training Topics

By Jo Liebl

Well, we are running down the home stretch and our training agenda is almost finalized. I am so excited about the outstanding sessions we are presenting to you this year. The IV-D tracks are full of great new topics and some refresher sessions. From “Putting the Full Nelson on Ethics” to “1st and Goal for Review and Adjustment and the DRA,” we’re sure that you’ll find lots of new plays to add to your playbook.

The IV-D Attorneys have done a marvelous job to putting together the legal track this year. They are including an Ethics Mock Trial and a Magistrate Panel, along with Case Law Update and an IRS session. I think both IV-D attorneys and child support workers alike can benefit from this amazing track.

The Professional Growth committee is running a blitz with their shining lineup. Last year’s very popular Maggie Tidwell is back with her session on Poverty. MVP Jedd Hafer is also back to present what I’m sure will be an action packed session on Burn Out. We also have some rookies on the roster to present some brand new stuff.

So take a look at the agenda that’s attached and start working on your lineup. Can’t wait to see you all in Vail!

ENTERTAINMENT

The entertainment at this year's conference promises to be another memorable event. First of we are continuing with a "monopoly" game throughout the conference for attendance at the sessions. The big event is we are having a "Sports Bar" on Monday night. This event will include the re-birth of the infamous lip-sync contest, plus many other opportunities to win cash and prizes for non lip-syncing people. So please put together your "act" and send an email to to enter into the lip-sync. You will be judged on originality, performance and lip-sync ability. Cash prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Judges can be bribed. This always is a great event so please enter as a team or an individual. See you at the conference. Thank you.
