Part II: Activities specifically related to the mandate
of OIE Reference Laboratories
3. International harmonisation and standardisation of methods for diagnostic testing or the production and testing of vaccines
a) Establishment and maintenance of a network with other OIE Reference Laboratories designated for the same pathogen or disease and organisation of regular inter-laboratory proficiency testing to ensure comparability of results
ü We participated to the ring trial, among OIE reference laboratories, to evaluate of FPA kit from Argentina and discussed their results in 64th Brucellosis international conference.
ü Diagnostic antigens produced in our laboratory were compared with antigens gained from other reference laboratories and international reference standards.
b) Organisation of inter-laboratory proficiency testing with laboratories other than OIE Reference Laboratories for the same pathogens and diseases to ensure equivalence of results
ü Diagnostic antigens (RBT, SAT, CFA) produced in our laboratory were compared with other diagnostic Lab. of our agency.
4. Preparation and supply of international reference standards for diagnostic tests or vaccines
ü We provided each 480 PCR test kit (Multiplex PCR) to differentiate 10 Brucella species to the Institute of Veterinary Medicine, Mongolia and the National Institute of Animal Health, Thailand, respectively.
5. Research and development of new procedures for diagnosis and control
ü We are collaborating with the Institute of Veterinary Medicine, the Mongolian State University of Agriculture, Mongolia for the joint international research project on 『Distribution of Brucella species from a variety of animal and the molecular epidemiological analysis by MLVA assay in Mongolia』.
ü For canine brucellosis DNA vaccine, our laboratory searched new candidates from Brucella canis cell envelope. Now we are trying to evaluate DNA vaccine using candidate antigens we found.
ü We developed a novel multiplex PCR assay for the differentiation of Brucella species. This assay rapidly and concisely discriminates all of 10 Brucella species registered on taxonomy of the genus Brucella by one-step.
ü In addition, as a part of an effort to improve the current serological diagnosis for brucellosis, we are evaluating several candidate antigens using 2-DE and western blotting.
ü Moreover, we collaborated with universities in Korea below topics 『Studies on pathogenesis of bovine brucellosis through understanding of Brucella abortus-host cell interaction』 and 『Surveillance of Brucellosis in wild animals and rodents』.
6. Collection, analysis and dissemination of epizootiological data relevant to international disease control
ü None
7. Maintenance of a system of quality assurance, biosafety and biosecurity relevant to the pathogen and the disease concerned
ü We have been applying ISO/IEC 17025 (KOLAS No. KT372) system since 2008.
8. Provision of consultant expertise to OIE or to OIE Member Countries
ü We consulted on diagnostic methods of brucellosis and discussed on research collaboration with the Institute of Veterinary Medicine, the Mongolian State University of Agriculture in Mongolia (Jul 2011).
ü We consulted on control of brucellosis and discussed on research collaboration and cooperation related to brucellosis with 4 officers (including director general) of the National Institute of Animal Health (NIAH) in Thailand (Aug 2011).
9. Provision of scientific and technical training to personnel from other OIE Member Countries
ü We introduced OIE reference laboratory and explained on current situation of brucellosis in Korea for livestock officers (10 persons) from Ethiopia (Jun 2011).
ü We gave a seminar on brucellosis for 26 veterinary officer from 14 Asian countries attended to “seminar on livestock product safety management in Asia” (Oct 2011)
ü We provided scientific and technical training to Prof. Rahman from Department of Medicine, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Bangladesh (Jun - Oct 2011).
10. Provision of diagnostic testing facilities to other OIE Member Countries
ü We provided our Lab. and diagnostic reagents for confirmatory test on 1,000 serum samples (cattle, buffalo, goats, sheep) and 150 suspect cultures from Bangladesh
11. Organisation of international scientific meetings on behalf of OIE or other international bodies
ü None
12. Participation in international scientific collaborative studies
ü We made a MOU(MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING) with the Institute of Veterinary Medicine (IVM), the Mongolian State University of Agriculture, Mongolia (Jul 2011) and launched collaborative research project on 『Distribution of Brucella species from a variety of animals and the molecular epidemiological analysis by MLVA assay in Mongolia』(Dec 2011).
