Element 8 – Admission Requirements

“Admission Requirements, if applicable.” Ed. Code § 47605 (b)(5)(H).

  1. Admittance

TCHS shall admit all students who wish to apply. (Education Code section 47605(d)(2)(A)). However, as a conversion charter school, TCHS must admit students who reside in the attendance boundary of the school as established by the District hereafter referred to as “resident students”. (Education Code section 47605(d)(1)). Students cannot be required to attend a charter school. (Education Code

section 47605(f)). Regular applications for non-matriculating students and from our feeder schools (Woodland Hills Academy, Sutter Middle School, Hale Middle School, and Portola Middle school) will be available the first Monday of February and due the first Monday of May.

  1. Lottery

If TCHS reaches its school-wide operational capacity, a public random drawing/lottery will be conducted. Currently enrolled students (regardless of residence) shall have preference so as to be exempt from the lottery. The lottery shall provide preference for students residing in LAUSD boundaries, siblings of students already attending TCHS, and those residing within the attendance area of TCHS. Students not selected through the lottery process will be wait-listed until a seat becomes available. This wait-list is effective for one year. In the event that TCHS reaches capacity and is unable to enroll in-coming students who reside in the attendance boundary of the school, TCHS will consult and coordinate with Education Service Center North administration to identifythe appropriate receiver school(s).

If TCHS determines that fraudulent address information was used to establishresident status in the attendance area, the student may be withdrawn and the studentwill be referred back to his/her school of residence, in accordance with District policy.

Informational flyers, brochures, phone messages, District distributed information sheets, school, parent, or district organized fairs or presentations are methods used by TCHS to communicate to all interested parties the rules of the lottery process.

The procedures for the lottery are verified in a well advertised open meeting held during the month of December. All interested parties are informed through written communication, email and other electronic means of the December open public meeting. The submission of applications for TCHS’ lottery begins right after the meeting in December.

Written communication, email and other electronic means will instruct the public on the timeline of events. Applications will be due on a designated date in February. Completed applications are turned into the MAIN OFFICE only and are time stamped. All late submissions are automatically placed on a wait list.

The actual lottery will be held on a designated date in March. The lottery will take place in Taft Hall or other designated location at TCHS. Names of students selected are typed and displayed, as they are drawn, on a wide screen for all to view. The lottery is open to the public. Attendance is not required at the lottery drawing. Parents/Guardians who are not in attendance and whose students are selected to attend TCHS will be notified as soon as possible after the meeting of their child’s acceptance.
