CRAFT-STEM Program
Internships /

CRAFT-STEM is an acronym for Columbus Region Academy of Future Teachers of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). It is part of a Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship grant awarded to Columbus State University by the National Science Foundation through Grant Number 1136356. The purpose of the program is to recruit, prepare, and graduate more secondary teachers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. The program also seeks to increase participation by underrepresented groups and provide highly qualified teachers in high need school districts.

CRAFT-STEM recruiting components include a summer STEM Honors Camp for rising 7th and 8th graders, internships for CSU freshmen and sophomores, and substantial scholarships for juniors and seniors (and in some cases post baccalaureate students) pursuing secondary certification in STEM fields at CSU. Our hope is that students who participate in CRAFT-STEM internships will become enthusiastic about STEM and STEM teaching as a result of their experience.

CRAFT-STEM internships pay $11.25/hour for up to 400 hours of work on projects designed to stimulate interest in teaching a STEM subject. Please refer to the list of available projects for more information.

Requirements for 2016 internships are the following:

·  US citizen or national, or a permanent resident alien at the time of application

·  Enrolled at CSU as a full time student in 2015-2016 or a former STEM Honors Camp participant committed to attending CSU as a full time freshman in fall 2016

·  Current CSU students: Freshman or sophomore standing (exceptions may be made for juniors in STEM majors who are interested in completing the UTeach Columbus program)

Selection criteria include the following:

·  Strong academic performance and potential in math and science as evidenced through grade point average (3.0 or higher preferred), SAT/ACT scores, faculty recommendations and other appropriate achievements

·  Potential interest in teaching

·  Good communication skills

·  Record showing a strong work ethic and reliability

·  Balance of enrollments across the degree programs

·  Preference given to students majoring in STEM disciplines

Review of applications will begin December 4 and continue as long as slots are available.
