  1. DESCRIPTION

This course takes students on a journey through the Kentucky Core Academic Standards for Middle School Writing. Topics include (but are not limited to) writing for various purposes and audiences, writing informative and expository pieces, writing narrative pieces, and writing argumentative pieces. Steps in the writing process will be reviewed and practiced. If there is student interest, students may also publish some of their writing in a special middle school publication which will be made available to students and parents for a small price at the end of the year.

B. TEXT AND REQUIRED SUPPLIES

1. Textbooks, novels, and non-fiction books will be supplied by the school.

2. Students must purchase a Grammar and Language Workbook from the school for $10.00.

3. #2 Pencils

4. Black or Blue Pens

5. ~ 300 pieces ofpaper per year[That’s an average of less than 2 per day of school.]

6. A binder or notebook or folder system with which you can keep up with a year’s worth of handouts,

homework, and returned tests. You will need these to study for your cumulative exam in May.

7. Lined notecards and 2 poster boards at some point in the course of the year.

D. GRADING PLAN

Coursework will be weighted as follows:

Nine Weeks Grade

Formative Assessments (homework, quizzes, some in class work)35%

Summative Assessments (tests, final product writing pieces, etc.)65%

Course Grade

The Middle School Writing Rotation Class is one of four middle school classes you will take in the course of the year. Each nine weeks will present a different class. This writing nine weeks course grade serves as 25% of the entire rotation course grade at the end of the year.

E. CLASSROOM RULES OF CONDUCT

1. Come to class prepared.

2. Be respectful to others in word and deed.

3. Raise your hand and wait to be called upon before speaking.

4. Remain in your seat unless given permission to leave it.

5. Handbook rules apply, as well.
