11/8/09 – Orono, Maine

In true rivalry game style, the UVM and UMaine club football teams fought until the end and on a 1 yard TD run by UVM's RB and club president Doug DeLuca in his final game, the UVM Catamounts edged the UMaine Black Bears 21-20 in the first ever NCFA sanctioned collegiate club football game.

UMaine came out firing and would take the opening drive deep into UVM territory but a missed 30 yard FG attempt by UMaine's Dustin Snow kept the game scoreless. Umaine would drive deep again but turn the ball over at the UVM 28 yard line on downs.

After UVM went 3 and out, the black bears would start at their own 38 yard line to begin the second period in a scoreless tie. UM would drive 62 yards on 5 plays. QB Brett Davision would connect with TE Steve McGuire for a 27 yard gain and a 18 yard run by RB John Goulette would set up Umaine on the UVM 4 yard line where Goulette would rush for the TD, and with Snow's kick UMaine lead 7-0. Following a kick return to their own 45 yard line, the Catamounts would answer capped off by a 1 yard TD rush by QB Korey Johnson. Josh Henshaw's kick would make the score 7-7. Not wanting to give the ball back to Maine, UVM successfully executed an onside kick and had the ball again. Henshaw would attempt a 54 yard FG on the drive but would be well short giving Maine the ball late in the half. The Black Bears picked up a pair of first downs but would punt the ball to the catamounts with 4 seconds remaining and the score at the half would be 7-7

After an outstanding kick and coverage by the UMaine kickoff team, UVW started deep in their own territory and go 3 and out. The Black Bears would also go 3 and out but the punt was muffed at the UVM 23 yard line and UMaine would take over there.

Two plays later Davision would connect with TE David Searle for the 23 yard TD. Snow's kick was missed which proved to be costly for the Bears. UVM would make a big play as DeLuca would run for 44 yards setting Vermont up at the 26 yard line, but two plays later Korey Johnson' s fumble was recovered by UMaine LB Jeff Langenheim ending the threat.

UVM would drive deep but late in the 3rd quarter UMaine CB Wyatt Johnson would make his second interception of the season and the score at the end of 3 was 13-7 UMaine. Tha Bears would drive to the Vermont 6 yard line, but following a Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty on overexcited UMaine coach Eric Whitman, the 37 yard field goal attempt was missed by Snow. Later in the quarter, UVM would fumble at their own 24 yard line with the recovery made by UMaine LB Jordan Sweird. Davison would later find Searle again for a 9 yard TD and snow's kick made the score 20-7 with just over 3 minutes to go in the game.

UMaine received a personal foul penalty setting UVM up near midfield. Korey Johnson would connect with Conner O'Grady for a 52 yard score off a tipped ball and with the extra point cut the score to 20-14

the Black Bears would recover a UVM squibb kick at their 42 yard line but anothe costly penalty would set them back at their own 22 yard line with 1:37 to go. Appearing to be on their way to their 6th victory on the season, disaster struck for UMaine. After a kneel down on first down and a fumble by FB Eric Bezanson on second at the 25 yard line UVM would nearly completely kill the clock capped off by DeLuca's game winning score. The extra point by Kenshaw would be the final point that won the game for the Catamounts.

UVM concludes their independant season with the win while UMaine drops to 5-2 overall and remain 5-1 and the #1 team in the NEFL2 East Division

The Black Bears will host the NEFL2 East Divisional Championship game on saturday 11/14 with kickoff scheduled for 8:00 pm at Morse Field with their opponent still yet to be determined.
