The Weed Science Society of the Philippines (WSSP) was organized on September 6, 1968 by individuals and organizations interested in the study and control of weeds. The major objectives of WSSP are: 1) encourage and promote the development of scientific knowledge concerning weeds and their control; 2) foster high standards of weed science education and research and encourage its acceptance as a field of training; 3) promote the publication and dissemination of knowledge gained on weeds and their control; 4) cooperate with other organizations that have similar or related objectives; and 5) advise government, upon request, in matters of weed science and related areas of plant protection.

WSSP organizes and co-sponsors scientific meetings and conferences to discuss and evaluate recent advances in the field of weed science and plant protection in the country and internationally. WSSP maintains the Philippine Journal of Weed Science as its official publication, published at least once a year.

WSSP has two scholarship grants: the Undergraduate Scholarship Grant that supports students from the two main universities in the Philippines; the University of the Philippines at Los Baños, Laguna and Leyte State University, Leyte

INVITATION

Dear Colleagues, Friends and Fellow Weed Workers:

The Organizing Committee is honored and pleased to invite you to the 19th conference of the Asian-Pacific Weed Science Society. It will be held in Manila, Philippines in 17-21 March, 2003. The conference will be hosted by the Weed Science Society of the Philippines (WSSP) and co-sponsored by the Pest Management Council of the Philippines (PMCP) and the Crop Protection Association of the Philippines (CPAP). It is open to all APWSS members and other fellow workers in weed science. It is attended by about 500 delegates from over 30 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, New Zealand, U.S. and Europe.

The Organizing Committee is preparing a program that will cater to a broad range of interests from immediate on-farm weed control problems in tropical crops to the latest in biotechnology and information technology as related to weed science. In this age of globalization, these issues are of utmost importance in order to keep pace with the fast development of technology in this new millennium. In addition to the scientific program, we are also preparing a program for spouses and accompanying persons. Manila, the site of the conference, offers a wide range of places for sight seeing, shopping, dining and entertainment.

Having hosted two past APWSS conferences in 1969 and 1983, WSSP looks forward to sharing its hospitality again with all of you. So we enjoin everyone to come to Manila in 2003 to get updated and discuss the latest trends and developments in weed science, visit with old friends, renew or make new acquaintances and in the process also promote the advancement of weed science in the Asia-Pacific region.

We then look forward to having you with us in Manila in 2003 for an educational, informative and exciting conference.

Sincerely yours,

DR. AURORA M. BALTAZAR

President, Asian-Pacific Weed Science Society

Chair, Organizing Committee 19th APWSS Conference

Tagaytay Tour, $56. Tagaytay is 60 km southwest of Manila; at 2250 ft above sea level offers a panoramic view of Taal Volcano, the smallest and lowest volcano in the world, sitting on a lake; described as “a lake within an island within a lake within an island”.

Guests will board a luxurious 120-seater 25 knots ferryboat, which will bring them to the island in just an hour.
