In Edward Scissorhands, he often uses high key lighting to show that a place is cheerful or safe. For example, when Edward first arrives at Peg’s house, the town and the house are lit up with high key lighting. The audience feels that Edward is arriving at a happier, better home than the one he came from. Lighting is also used well in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Low key lighting is used in films to make a scene more depressing or scary. Tim Burton uses low key lighting in the Bucket’s house to show that they are poor and somewhat depressed. The audience feels bad for this family and ultimately wants good things to happen for them. Tim Burton uses lighting very well to set the mood in a movie.
