JOB TITLE: Controller

Regular Full-time, Exempt (Number of Direct Reports: 1)

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

1.Maintain accounting system and authorize changes to accounts structure.

2.Manage bank accounts and monitor cash resources.

3.Supervise accountant and authorize all entries to accounting system; verify entries for accuracy and proper classification.

4.Support program staff in the areas of budgets, contracts, invoicing and vouchers, and grant financial reporting.

5.Maintain and implement internal accounting policies, procedures, and controls in compliance with grants and generally accepted accounting principles.

6.Monitor spending in compliance with grant budgets and other grant restrictions.

7.Oversee the payroll function and finalize the pivot chart to create each payroll entry.

8.Calculate the monthly allocations; monitor the indirect cost pool.

9.Accrue all revenue; perform cash drawdowns for Federal grants.

10.Implement month-end close process, reconcile all balance sheet accounts; create reports for directors and managers

11.Conduct monthly financial meetings with program staff following established agenda.

12.Handle the annual 401(k) plan review with the advisor; work with the accounting firm to complete the annual IRS filing; schedule the annual meeting with staff and advisor.

13.Work with insurance agents to determine liability and other insurance needs and recommend course of action, obtain quotes, arrange purchase following approval; monitor policies and communicate changes to agent.

14.Prepare for and manage the annual audit; review and complete the IRS and State of Illinois filings.

15.Present Board reports, including annual audited and interim financial statements.

16.Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

Knowledge of grants and non-profit accounting. Strong interpersonal and communication skills; excellent analytical skills; critical thinking and problem solving skills; the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Position Qualifications:

Four-year undergraduate degree in a related financial area required. CPA designation or CPA “in progress” isa plus. Minimum of 3 years of experience, preferably in a non-profit setting. Must be proficient in MS Office Suites.
