Job Statement (from Job Description) / This advanced practitioner nursing role is to work as part of a multidisciplinary medical team providing
emergency medical services in the out of hours (OOH) period.The Nurse Practitioner will have commandof a specific expert knowledge base and clinical competence to be able to make complex, clinicaldecisions when consulting with patients presenting with a variety of illnesses. Patient consultations willrequire specialised clinical judgement and experience to make a differential diagnosis, treat, prescribeand discharge the patient or refer the patient to the GP.The Nurse Practitioner will work independentlyand autonomously without supervision.
Knowledge, Training And Experience Required To Do The Job (from Job Description) / Essential
1st Level Registration with the NMC
Degree level with appropriate experience and post registration training - equivalent to Masters level
Minimum of 5 years post-registration experience
Post Registration Nurse Practitioner Qualification with supervision / consolidation
of practice (Course 1 yr – level 3 or 4)
Independent Extended Nurse Prescriber
(Course 6 months – with Doctor Mentoring)
Substantial Evidence of continuing professional development relating to Advanced Practice, this may include short courses at Degree and or Masters Level.
IT skills
Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written)
Ability to work on own initiative
Problem-solving skills
Leadership skills
Ability to work as part of a team
Previous experience in primary care/ community/clinic setting
Ability to understand Judgement safe practice

Advanced nurse practitioners are highly experienced and educated members of the care team who are able to diagnose and treat your healthcare needs or refer you to an appropriate specialist if needed.
Advanced nurse practitioners are highly skilled nurses who can:

- Take a comprehensive patient history
- Carry out physical examinations
Advanced Physical examination skills ie. Ear, Eye, Throat, Chest, Abdomen, Musculoskeletal and Dermatological
- Use their expert knowledge and clinical judgment to identify the potential diagnosis
Making independent clinical decisions based on own clinical assessment and interpretation of findings without the benefit of Clinical Case Notes.
- Refer patients for investigations where appropriate
Conduct invasive and non-invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures where appropriate.
- Make a final diagnosis
- Decide on and carry out treatment, including the prescribing of medicines, or refer patients to an appropriate specialist
Treat patients in accordance with Pharmacology guidelines when prescribing or using Patient Group Directions / Protocols.
- Use their extensive practice experience to plan and provide skilled and competent care to meet patient’s health and social care needs, involving other members of the health care team as appropriate
The Nurse Practitioners decision making skills will be at an advanced level to allow a full clinical analysis of the presenting symptoms to inform decision making, diagnosis, management including a prescription if appropriate. All Nurse Practitioners use judgement safe practice and there is always a GP available if they need to refer on.
- Ensure the provision of continuity of care including follow-up visits
- Assess and evaluate, with patients, the effectiveness of the treatment and care provided and make changes as needed
- Patient satisfaction / opinion following treatment received by NPs
- Are patients seen by NP more likely to contact GP within the next few days.
- Why do some patients choose to be seen OOH rather than see own GP. Do they see the GEMS service as an alternative to GP practice or as an emergency service
- Work independently, although often as part of a health care team
- Provide leadership
ANPs may occasionally lead a team, but they also may influence others by acting as an expert and providing advice to others. / Act as a role model through the provision of professional leadership and demonstration of competent and effective practice.
Act as an effective change agent integrating information gained from research and audit and disseminating this throughout the whole nursing service or indeed to their medical colleagues.
Teach and mentor undergraduate Minor Illness Nurse Practitioners and assist other multidisciplinary colleagues who require to have an overview of the role and department.
Contribute to strategic issues relating to the nurse practitioner service and the speciality.
Act in a collaborative and advisory role to senior management.
- Make sure that each patient’s treatment and care is based on best practice
Actively promote and disseminate research based practice.
