Scottish Postal History, 3 October 2005 Page 2 Estimate.

David Jefferies was well known for many things, amongst which were his great knowledge of and enthusiasm for the two subjects we are offering in today’s auctions; Cinderellas and Scottish Postal History.
David was one of the instrumental names in the establishment of Scottish Postal History as a serious area of study. Along with some other well-known names, he founded the Scottish Postmark Group, and their series of publications were very important in laying foundations upon which numerous later collectors built our current thorough knowledge.

This must be one of the best collections of Scottish Postal History to appear at auction in recent years. It is quite different from some others however in that such a wide variety is covered; in areas, in types, in ages, and in values. I am sure that this current offering will give fresh impetus to the hobby, bringing new material into the hands of another generation of collectors. Much that is sold here will appear over the coming months and years in society displays, competitive exhibits, humble collections - and in dealer’s boxes.
The Saint Kilda collection is outstanding, and appears as the last section of this catalogue.

We suggest you spend a little time checking the various sections for your interests. For example, the keen Ayrshire collector would be disappointed to miss the interesting items in the Prisoner of War section, or the Western Islands enthusiast might miss the Davaar cover (which is in the “Cachets” section).

SCOTTISH POSTAL HISTORY
Collections and Mixed Lots.
Ü This first section forms the main run of the collection; a “simple” collection of postmarks
arranged on pages alphabetically by post office name, housed in file boxes. Everything is
included from pre-stamp items, through Queen Victoria, into more modern, and sometimes
almost up-to-date. Due to the arrangement it would not be feasible to offer this in town or
county sections, so it is simply offered box-by-box.
As a random example, we picked box “F” which runs from Fair Isle, Fairlie, and Fairmilehead,
through to Furnace, Fushie Bridge, and Fyvie, with Falkirk and Fort William as two of the
biggest. This box contains 209 covers or cards, 760 pieces (or identifiable postmarks on stamps),
and about 40 other items (mainly photographs of post offices). This is a full box, and all boxes
are about equally as full unless mentioned..
Condition is generally good to fine, with some here and there either poor or well above average.
