Informatics Elective for Medical Students
Naval Medical Center San Diego offers an Introduction to Medical Informatics
course designed for fourth year medical students. Working on an ongoing or
self-initiated medical IT project, the course provides students with an
opportunity to explore the integration of medicine and information
technologies in an experiential manner. Students will gain an understanding
of the field of clinical informatics and the role it plays in the national
effort to improve quality of care and eliminate medical errors.

OBJECTIVES

The rotating Medical Student will meet the following learning objectives:

Describe the role of medical informatics in the health care delivery system with attention to the role of health IT in patient safety, improved efficiency and accuracy and utilization of resources.

Demonstrate working understanding vocabulary to accurately communicate with informaticists to include: Electronic medical systems (e.g. EMR, CPOE, eRx, PHR, CDS); Patient portal, blue button; Role of health IT in patient safety; Imaging Informatics (e.g. VNA, NLP, PACS, VR); Health information standardization (e.g. HL7, DICOM); and Medical Information Terminologies/Taxonomies (e.g. SNOMED).

Demonstrate working knowledge by using Microsoft Excel for advanced data manipulation.

Demonstrate written and oral communication skills by presenting culmination of the rotation in a conference setting and publication submission.

Participants have an interest in health information technology

Participants have at least a basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel

Participants demonstrate exceptional professional and personal values

REQUIRMENTS FOR PASSING THE COURSE:

Coordinate with the course faculty to identify a clinical scenario where data gathering and evaluation would be valuable.

Mine CHCS or other local sources for scenario specific data.

Utilizing skills and techniques learned create a usable database to answer clinical informatics query.

Submit an article for publication in the field of medical or health informatics based on rotation experience.
