Term 1 in Tigers

Welcome to Tigers!

The children have all made such a fantastic start and we are thoroughly enjoying getting to know them. Thank you all for helping your child create their treasure box, they really are super and help the children to share information about themselves in a fun way.

We loved our first school dinner!

From Monday 18th September all the children will be in full time. The gates open at 8.45am and the bell is rung at 8.55am. As the children have made such a fantastic start we would like them to start lining up in the playground with the the rest of the school on Monday. They will then walk into the classroom with the Tiger teachers.

Welly boots, P.E kits and water bottles

As we spend so much time outside we really like the children to have a pair of welly boots in school. It would be great if you could provide a named pair that can be left in school all the time. If you haven’t already, please could you send in a P.E kit to be left in school, the children need a white t-shirt, navy shorts and plimsolls in a named bag. At the end of each half term we will send the bag home to be washed.

We encourage the children to drink plenty of water during the day and we would be very grateful if they could bring their filled water bottle to school each day.Now that they are at big school we would ask that all toys are left at home.

To help us fit everything in to the children’s trays please could we ask that bulky keyrings and other items are not attached to book bags.

Magical Marvellous Me

This term our learning journey is Magical Marvellous Me! Through this learning journey the children will take part in learning experiences related to all seven areas of the Early Years curriculum. The topic is all about finding out about each other and getting used to all the exciting things we do in school. The treasure boxes have been a great start, and the children’s first paintings are proudly displayed in the classroom, do come and have a look.

Phonics

Once the children are all settled, we will begin introducing letter sounds.

Our first set of letters will be:

s,a,t,p,i,n

In our phonics sessions we will learn how to recognise the phoneme (sound) as well as recognising the grapheme (written letter). The children will practise identifying objects that begin with each letter. We will also be learning a fun action to go with each sound, this really helps to jog their memories.

As we learn each new sound we will also teach the children how to form the letter in a pre -cursive style with leading in ready for cursive (joined up) writing. We will send each of the letter sounds home as we learn them and it would be great if you could practise at home.

Some fun phonics games can be found on the following websites:

Within the next few weeks the children will start to bring home a reading book. Please could you share the book with your child as often as you can and make a note in their reading record each time. Talking about the story, what might happen next, which was the best bit and so on is just as important as reading the words. You could read the story together and encourage your child to pick out the sounds they recognise.

Tiger Tales

Attached to this letter you will find a set of speech bubbles, these are for our learning journey books. Your child’s achievements and experiences outside of school are just as important in contributing to development in their reception year as the things that happen in school and really help us to build a picture of the whole child. Please could you use the bubbles to tell us about anything your child achieves, says or experiences that you feel is significant. Some examples might be: riding a bike for the first time, writing their name in a birthday card independently, recognising numbers, getting dressed independently, gaining a badge in swimming, helping with gardening, looking after animals, cooking…………… to name but a few!

And finally…………

Thank you for bearing with us during this first fortnight. We know it might seem a bit disjointed with the children not being in every day, but there is method in our madness! It really does help the children to get to know us and feel comfortable in their surroundings within a small group. It also allows us to get to know them and build very positive relationships right from the start.

Many thanks,

Mrs Fernandes, Mrs Noakes and Mrs Ringer
