Teacher and or students

Required Personal Protective Equipment: CSA approved safety glasses or goggles, CSA approved steel-toed footwear, 100% cotton coveralls preferred, and hearing protection required in confined space/area and/or per RETSD policy. If required the use of leather gloves to handle work piece.

GENERAL NOTES: No lighters, matches or cell phones are allowed in the shop area. Long necklaces, bracelets and rings should be removed. Long hair should be tied back. Strings and hoods hanging from pullovers/sweaters should be removed or tucked inside of coveralls.

Job Safety Analysis:

1 / Inspect the work area. Be aware of surroundings to prevent injury.
1) Observe surrounding work area for proper housekeeping.
2) Remove all clutter, and flammable or combustible materials to ensure a safe work area. / 1) Trip, fall, slip.

3 / Inspect die grinder components for safe operation.
1) Inspect grinding head to ensure it is properly secure to the tool.
2) Inspect cord for worn insulation. Do not use with worn insulation. Tag-out and advise instructor or notify instructor right away and ask instructor to Tag-out. / 1) Flying grinding head.
2) Electrocution. / 1) Inspect grinding head.
2) Do not use equipment with damage electrical cord (worn out insulation, or damage receptacle).
4 / Before plugging in the die grinder, ensure it is in the "off" position.
1) Do not route electrical cords near sharp objects and or hot surfaces that may damage the insulation.
2) Compressed Air - do not allow the compressed air to blow toward your skin / 1) Possible electrocution (when machine has stopped and you grab the cord to find out why).
2) Compressed air can cause air bubbles that enter the blood stream. / 1) Watch the placement of the electrical cord - keep away from heat and sharp edges that can damage cord.
2) Keep the compressed air blowing away from your skin. Wear long sleeves.
5 / Energize the die grinder:
1) Ensure that the grinding head is pointed away from you and anyone else in the area. / Rotating grinding wheel.
Abrasion, Entanglement. / Keep grinding head pointed away from you and others.
6 / Operate the die grinder.
1) Apply steady, even pressure. / Flying metal shavings.
Excessive noise. / Apply steady, even pressure, ensure safety glasses and or face shield are on. Hearing protection when required per RETSD policy.
7 / Do not apply excessive force to the die grinder. May cause it to stall/overheat and create excessive sparks. / Sparks. / Do not apply excessive force. Ensure coveralls are 100% cotton nothing flammable in coveralls (no lighters, matches). Nothing flammable in surrounding area.
8 / Turn die grinder off, unplug and place in its proper storage area. / Electrocution. / Always unplug electrical tools from the base of the cord.
9 / Clean area and remove all waste material. / Trip, fall, slip. / Clean up work area and practice good housekeeping.
