SpartanSummerAthletic Development Program

The SpartanAthletic Development Program is open to enrolledrising 7th through 12th grade students. The programs consist of athletic development training designed to enhance the core components of athleticism (i.e. functional movement, strength, power, speed, agility, balance, muscular & cardiovascular endurance, reaction time, coordination, flexibility, and body composition). The foundation of the program is education and execution of proper training techniques. All training protocols follow the National Strength & Conditioning Association guidelines for athletic enhancement instruction and take into consideration the age, physical development, and physical abilities of each student (see NSCA Youth Resistance Training Position Paper on S&C Blog). Training sessions are divided into five groups: (1) Middle School Girls, (2) Middle School Boys, (3) Upper School Girls, (4) Upper School Football, and (5) Remaining Boys’ Athletic Teams. This system provides an efficient training structure for optimal use of our facilities and staffing. The summer presents a great opportunity to take advantage of a consistent strength & conditioning program. AthensAcademy deems it very important for athletes to train in preparation for competition and we are continually working to increase training opportunities. Through proper training, the individual will obtain the potential to perform at a higher level athletically, decrease the risk of injury, increase fitness, and many other intangible benefits.

In preparation for training:

  • Students must be enrolled and have a current athletic physical on file in the athletic department office.
  • It is important the Strength & Conditioning Coach and all other sport coaches be notified of any health concerns and/or physical limitations for each individual athlete.
  • It is recommended that each individual have a nutritionally sound breakfast at least 30 minutes prior to attending each training session and follow proper nutritional habits following training and throughout the day (See Resources on S&C Blog to down load nutrition principles)
  • It is important for each individual to practice appropriate hydration habits during the training and throughout the day. (See Resources on S&C Blog to down load nutrition principles)
  • Recovery and proper sleep are vital to optimal training adaptations (See Resources on S&C Blog to down load Weekly Recovery Guide)
  • Clothing should consist of athletic shorts, full t-shirts (no sleeveless shirts, tank tops, etc.), and athletic shoes. Also note that all clothing graphics must adhere to the AthensAcademy standards and guidelines (seeAthensAcademyhand book).
  • Be on Time: Programs will start the training session with an appropriate warm-up which is vital to training safety and effectiveness.
