Level 5

Purpose

This qualification recognises the specialist skills of Outdoor Recreation Instructors. Holders of this qualification will have demonstrated a high level of risk management in the outdoor recreation industry and the ability to instruct risk management to others. They will also have demonstrated research and writing skills as well as interpersonal communication skills to present information and facilitate groups. The Elective section of the qualification has been designed to allow for flexibility to choose unit standards from a number of Outdoor Recreation pursuits, or complementary skills in business, health and safety, Te Ao Tūroa, and workplace supervision. Holders of this qualification will have a well rounded ability to instruct and lead groups in the outdoors.

This qualification builds on from either the National Certificate in Outdoor Recreation (Instruction) with strands in Adventure Based Learning, Kayaking, Mountaineering, Single Pitch Rock Climbing, and Tramping [Ref: 0733] or the National Certificate in Caving (SRT Cave Guide Instruction) (Level 4) [Ref: 1192].

People intending to undertake this qualification in the workplace should seek advice to assist with their elective unit standard choice as some unit standards have prerequisite unit standards that are not included in this qualification.
