Intro

B. What are the characteristics of a good listening activity?
- not simply a memory test, realistic, actively helps ss to improve their listening, non threatening, using listening to get specific results/info

1). Personal Stories.

1). Prepare a slide presentation or pictures of T's family, hobbies, background, education, travel experiences, work experience, family tree etc. / PP/

2). Present slides/pix to ss for them to ask random questions. Repeat slides but only those requested
3). SS could retell what they remember to partners
4). SS prepare own pp's/pix to tell to each other, class.

2). Interviewing each other.

1). SS given prepared sheet of questions about family etc. Elicit?? / Qu. sheet
2). SS interview each other, and then present each other to larger group

3). Add on an item.

Each student adds on an item after repeating list

4). Guess from Cues

Stages / Aids / Time
1). Select a theme. Write out cues of vocab for ss to guess item / Lists
2). E.g. animals – Is found in Africa, is an endangered species, is large, runs slowly, has thick skin, has ivory tusks.
Sport – Is played by a 2 to 4 players, can last for hours or much less, requires a large open space, uses a unique scoring system full of unusual words, uses racquets and a ball / Lists
3). Can be done in teams. Points awarded a/to number of cues needed.

5). Training in note taking cf Dictogloss

Stages / Aids / Time
1). Prepare talks on familiar topic of interest to ss. / H/O
2). Give ss lecture outlines and true/false questions to complete
SS practice predicting answers. / Lectures

3). After lecture ss compare answers and revise answers.
4). SS write and ask one or more questions during lecture. Question slips cd be collected and answered.
5). SS write summary of lecture.

6). Find the treasures

Stages / Aids / Time
1). Small treasures placed around room. / Sweets?
2). One student blindfolded and given directions to find treasure by different team members. Winner gets most treasures in 3 minutes.
Could be done as two competing teams / Blindfolds

7). Cut up cartoon pictures - Can also be done with 9 pictures.

Stages / Aids / Time
1). Cut up cartoon strip into individual pictures. / Cut up cartoons.
2). Give half to each of pair.
3). SS must decide on correct order without looking at each other's pictures, just from describing pix to each other.

8). Different responses to a social problem

Stages / Aids / Time
1). SS in pairs. A given problem to complain about to B. E.g. noisy neighbours, sick relative, difficult boss, car accident, rude bus driver, harsh teacher. / Conflict situations
2). B listens with attitude shown (on card?) – sympathetic, interrogative, suggestive, evaluative – elicit attitudes from ss.

3). SS pairs role play in front of class.
A's – guess attitude
B's – write summary of conversation. / Family Conflicts

Stages of a Traditional Reading or Listening Lesson

1.  Build interest – use a warmer that relates topic to students' lives

2.  Pre-teach vocab if needed

3.  Set a gist or scanning question, which helps students get the general idea of the text

4.  Learners read or listen

5.  Learners compare answers in pairs or groups

6.  Learners check answers with teacher if needed

7.  Set an intensive reading or listening task

8.  Learners read or listen

9.  Learners compare answers

10.  Learners check answers with teacher

11.  Set an extension activity, perhaps for homework, which personalizes or applies vocab or new knowledge learnt
