1. Batik Station

Directions:

  1. Take one piece of white fabric.
  2. Dip your toothpick into the melted wax and apply it to the fabric in the design of your choice.
  3. Turn the fabric over and apply the wax, repeating the design exactly.
  4. Place the fabric between the folds of a paper towel.
  5. Press on the outside of the paper towel with a hard object to smash the wax into the fabric.
  6. Place the fabric into the dye and let sit for 5 minutes.
  7. After 5 minutes, pull the fabric out of the dye.
  8. Dry the fabric by pressing and wringing inside of a paper towel.
  9. Pick of the excess wax.
  10. Put the fabric between a folded paper towel and iron to soak up the wax.
  11. Clean up your station.
  12. Take one of the samples and your creation, save it for Day 2.
  1. Dye Station

Directions:

  1. Select one sample of each of the 5 provided fabrics.
  2. Using tongs put all of the samples into the dye. If they float to the top, push them down
  3. Let the samples soak for 5 minutes.
  4. Use the tongs and remove the samples from the dye.
  5. Place them on paper towels and pat or squeeze to dry them out.
  6. Separate the samples between the group members. Each person should have 5 different shades of dyed fabric.
  7. Let the fabrics dry.
  8. Put in order from lightest to darkest.
  9. Clean up your station.
  10. Save samples for Day 2.
  1. Textile Design Station

Directions:

  1. Sketch a design of your choice on the white paper.
  2. Color it in with colored pencils. Use any combination of the following colors. (red, blue, yellow, purple, green, orange and black)
  3. Lay the white fabric on top of you design and lightly trace your pattern.
  4. Paint your design on the fabric.
  5. Let dry.
  6. Clean up your station.
  7. Save samples for Day 2.

4. Printing Methods Station

Directions:

  1. Take a square of white fabric.
  2. Choose a stamp.
  3. Carefully press the stamp onto the ink and stamp it onto the fabric.
  4. Repeat to make a pattern. You can use more than one stamp.
  5. Clean stamp using a damp cloth.
  6. Clean up your station.
  7. Save sample for Day 2

5. Burning Station

Directions:

  1. Choose one of each of the five fabric samples.
  2. Pick one fabric as a group. Each person has their own.
  3. Using the tongs, carefully burn a corner of the fabric. Do not burn the entire piece.
  4. Glue on the Fiber Chart.
  5. Fill in the chart using the information on the “Fiber Burn Test”.
  6. Repeat with each type of fabric.
  7. Try and identify the type of fabric using the characteristics of the burn test.
