- Batik Station
Directions:
- Take one piece of white fabric.
- Dip your toothpick into the melted wax and apply it to the fabric in the design of your choice.
- Turn the fabric over and apply the wax, repeating the design exactly.
- Place the fabric between the folds of a paper towel.
- Press on the outside of the paper towel with a hard object to smash the wax into the fabric.
- Place the fabric into the dye and let sit for 5 minutes.
- After 5 minutes, pull the fabric out of the dye.
- Dry the fabric by pressing and wringing inside of a paper towel.
- Pick of the excess wax.
- Put the fabric between a folded paper towel and iron to soak up the wax.
- Clean up your station.
- Take one of the samples and your creation, save it for Day 2.
- Dye Station
Directions:
- Select one sample of each of the 5 provided fabrics.
- Using tongs put all of the samples into the dye. If they float to the top, push them down
- Let the samples soak for 5 minutes.
- Use the tongs and remove the samples from the dye.
- Place them on paper towels and pat or squeeze to dry them out.
- Separate the samples between the group members. Each person should have 5 different shades of dyed fabric.
- Let the fabrics dry.
- Put in order from lightest to darkest.
- Clean up your station.
- Save samples for Day 2.
- Textile Design Station
Directions:
- Sketch a design of your choice on the white paper.
- Color it in with colored pencils. Use any combination of the following colors. (red, blue, yellow, purple, green, orange and black)
- Lay the white fabric on top of you design and lightly trace your pattern.
- Paint your design on the fabric.
- Let dry.
- Clean up your station.
- Save samples for Day 2.
4. Printing Methods Station
Directions:
- Take a square of white fabric.
- Choose a stamp.
- Carefully press the stamp onto the ink and stamp it onto the fabric.
- Repeat to make a pattern. You can use more than one stamp.
- Clean stamp using a damp cloth.
- Clean up your station.
- Save sample for Day 2
5. Burning Station
Directions:
- Choose one of each of the five fabric samples.
- Pick one fabric as a group. Each person has their own.
- Using the tongs, carefully burn a corner of the fabric. Do not burn the entire piece.
- Glue on the Fiber Chart.
- Fill in the chart using the information on the “Fiber Burn Test”.
- Repeat with each type of fabric.
- Try and identify the type of fabric using the characteristics of the burn test.
