Den Pizzazz POW WOW 2011
If 3 boys are standing, talking, they are talking about doing something. If 3 boys are walking they are on their way to do something. If they are running, they have just done something.
People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing, that’s why we recommend it daily.-Zig Ziglar
Helpful hints for a successful den meeting:
- Have a routine, ie: gathering and doodles, welcome, roll call, motto and promise, den yell, activity, games, homework assignment and closing. DO, HOME ASSIGNMENT, VERIFY
- Make it fun
- Overplan!! Do not give idle time and always have a plan B
- Get all the boys involved.
Den yells and cheers
- promotes den unity and enthusiam, lets boys get out some steam
- Make the yell rythmic and simple, and make the last word something they can shout.
- High school and college cheers can be easily adapted
- Have the boys help, it will give them a sense of pride
- Give a cheer for any occasion: welcoming a new cub, someones completes their den doodle, boys that accomplished their home assignments….
Den Skits
- Should be kept short (5 min tops) and involve every boy
- Use short lines that don’t need to be memorized
- Use simple props and costumes (boys can make these)
- Encourage their imagination
- Teaches the boys to speak loudly and clearly and gives them a chance for dramatic expression
Den Songs
- Have fun and the scouts will too
- Don’t worry about singing in perfect pitch, the boys don’t care
- Remember, louder is better
- Scouts can make their own instruments, and make sure every song has parts for the boys to sing
- Help the den write their own song, remember they are young boys it will probably be gross
- Good Cub Scout songs make no sense!

Songs:
Little Black things (Tune: oh my darling clementine)
Little Black Things
Little Black Things
Crawling up and down my arm
If I wait till they have babies
I can start a Black Thing farm
Havent had a bath
In over two years
And I never wash my clothes Now Ive got these little black things
Where they came from heaven knows
Once a cute girl
Tried to kiss me
But she screamed and gave a yell
And she ran ‘fore I could ask her was it the black things or the SMELL?
Repeat chorus (verse one)
Tom the toad (sung to oh chirstmas tree)
Oh, Tom the toad, Oh Tom the toad
Why are you lying in the road
Oh, Tom the toad, Oh Tom the toad
Why are you lying in the road
Didn't you see that light turn red?
Now there are tracks across your head.
Oh, Tom the toad, Oh Tom the toad
Why are you lying in the road?
Oh, Fred the fish, oh Fred the fish
Why are you lying on the dish?
Oh, Fred the fish, oh Fred the fish
Why are you lying on the dish?
You did not see the hook ahead
And now your head is stuffed with bread
Oh, Fred the fish, oh Fred the fish
Why are you lying on the dish?
Games
WHALE AHOY
One boy is the whale and the rest are rocks (they can’t move). The whale runs around the “rocks” while the “rocks” (cub scouts) try and harpoon the whale with a wad of paper- they will work together by tossing the wad from rock to rock to harpoon him. Once the whale has been hit then another boy takes the whales place.
MAGIC TELEGRAM
On a piece of paper write down ten letters from top to bottom (could be a word or just random letters), then let the boys make a note by using each letter. First one done is the winner.
CHAIN WORD
While passing the stick around the circle or table, say a word then the next boy says a word that is associated with the word and so on
Ie: mouse/trap/door/knob/knee /high/school…..
Mystery Box
Place and item in a box and let one boy see it. Have him describe the item without actually saying what it is. Have the other boys guess what it is.
SCAVENGER HUNT
Give the boys a list and paper bag and have them hunt for as many things as they can and that will fit in the paper bag. When finished, have them glue some of the objects on to the bag to make puppets for the den yell or cheer.
CRAFTS
Marble maze: using old shirt boxes have the boys make a maze using long strips of cardboard (cereal or cracker boxes work great). They can bend them, cut them, and hot glue them. When finished tilt the box back and forth to get the marble from one end to the other.
CRAYON MELTING
Have the boys find a rock and heat it in the oven. Using old crayons, color on the rock. Colors will melt with each other creating amazing designs. Be careful that they don’t touch the rock. Hint: put rock on paper plate to catch the run off and make it easy to carry home
COLLAGE SCRAPBOOK COVER
Let the boys find fun pictures from magazines that describe themselves. Have them make a collage on a piece of paper. Use this as the cover of their den scrapbook
JUST FOR FUN
Antacid rockets: This will be the boys favorite!! Get 35mm film cannisters from any camera shop or photo developing place, a box of antacid pills, and a bucket of water. Place a tablet in the cannister add water, put the lid on an set it upside down on the side walk and watch the boys reaction when it “takes off” Let them experiment to see which ones go higher, more or less water or more tablets!
