Re: 2009 Social Studies Summer Institute

You are invited to attend the Fourth Annual Social Studies Summer Institute sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Education. Our Summer Institutes have proven to be informative and beneficial experiences for everyone involved, and we anticipate that the 2009 Social Studies Summer Institute will meet the needs of our teachers and exceed their expectations once again. Participants are invited to attend follow-up sessions during the 2009-2010 school year if they choose to do so. The summer institute combined with the sessions in October and March will provide systemic professional development.

This year’s Social Studies Summer Institute will be held at the Bridgeport Conference Center, conveniently located off of I-79 at Exit 124 Jerry Dove Drive in Harrison County. Please visit the link http://www.bridgeportconference.com/ for driving directions and facility details.

The WVDE will cover the cost of the facility, A/V equipment, breakfast, lunch and breaks throughout the institute as well as dinner on Thursday evening. The WVDE will cover the expenses and stipends of all presenters, as well as all books and materials given to the participants and used throughout the institute.

The local education agencies are asked to cover the expense of the participants’ lodging, travel to and from the conference and the evening meal on Wednesday.

We are asking each participant to bring a laptop computer if they have access to one. It will be beneficial to participants if they can work and interact using a laptop during sessions. Free high-speed Internet access is available to all participants.

We also encourage teachers to be presenters and to submit a Presentation Proposal for either full 75-minute sessions or for the 25-minute Chautauqua sessions on Thursday evening. In a Chautauqua, participants move throughout the presentations providing an opportunity for much sharing and learning. All Presentation Proposals must be submitted no later than April 30. Those teachers whose presentations are accepted will be notified by May 30. Both the registration link and the presentation proposal link are at the end of this letter.
