Approval of Minutes:

·  Minutes from the last meeting (May 3, 2012) were approved.

Treasurer’s Report:

·  Since the beginning of the new school year, we have had expenditures for the Foyer in the front of the school, the Pride Lunch and refreshments for registration.

·  Our current report balance is $13,906.90 with about $10,200 of that accounted for through budgeted items or outstanding grants, leaving us with about $3,700 available for additional grants we can provide. We have about $2000 for Professional Development

·  We received about $5200 in donations and about $5000 in PTSO dues.

Principal’s Report:

·  This has been the easiest start of a new academic school year in 27 years.

·  HHS student enrollment is currently 2630 students – ending was 2550 students last year. HHS can accommodate 2700- 2800 with the new building. We anticipate 10% growth throughout the district; this is holding steady.

o  The Freshman class is the biggest class with 730 students.

o  We have 20 new teachers; we had several coaches leave for head coaching jobs.

o  We have six trailer classes—all doing well. The issue really was where to place teachers more than where to place students.

·  Everyone’s attitude has been phenomenal.

o  I-pads have been distributed to all seniors; this has been very well received.

o  February is the target date on both buildings which will add 32 classrooms.

·  I-pads – 5 day teacher initiative with school starting later for teachers to teach teachers about this new technology. Teachers were at all different knowledge levels with I-pads. Two school systems have already called to see what we were doing.

·  AYP: we passed! This is incredible considering our size and diversity.

·  The good news is the transitioning to more common core. Some end of year testing will take place that will be ACT/ college core based. It will be a state test and we will need to set the foundation once it is in place.

·  The HHS Breezeway is phenomenal—it looks better than we thought it would!
We hope to eliminate the bottleneck in the Main Office and have an alternate route.

·  Library reconfiguration with new sofas, juice bar seating, new carpet. The furniture should be delivered September 20th. The library is being made into a more friendly area for students with their I-pads.

·  HHS Football traveled this week to South Panola. We received many complimentary messages about the character of our players and fans attending this game.

·  HHS Homecoming Game will be next week—our first game at Regions.

·  Pep Rallies will be in the stadium because of the fire code. The gym is supposed to hold 1900 students. The logistics of having pep rallies in the gym with our growing population, with the buses, etc has resulted in the pep rallies moving outside. We have vowed to preserve the senior traditions when we move. It is simply not safe to have these in the gym. Next Friday is the first Pep Rally. Buses will load adjacent to the stadium.

·  The Exit Exam will occur the week of September 17th. The 9th and 10th do not have to test this year. We will probably not have a late start as the testing will just occur in the cafeteria and library.

Faculty Liaison

·  October will be the month when clubs start. Club Day is being restructured. Every student will on a roll – if not going to a club, the student will be assigned to a specific room to go to.

·  National Honor Society may collect box tops; this would result in free money for our school.

Volunteers/ Hospitality Report:

·  Teacher Open House – great response from the HHS volunteer parents – fed 80-90 teachers.

·  Faculty Lunch – desserts brought in by volunteers – again, a great turn out.

·  Teacher of the Quarter Lunch will be held in October.

·  Attendance Desk Volunteer Assistance request was filled within a few days.

Band Report:

·  The HHS Band will again have two shows including a competition show.

Athletics Report:

Boys 2012-2013:

·  Cross Country:

o  The HHS Boys’ Cross Country Team finished 2nd in the Montevallo Invitational

·  Football:

o  The HHS Varsity Football Team:

o  Won three 7 on 7 tournaments over the summer (Lassiter, Foley, and our own Select National) Florence 35-14.

Old Business:

·  HHS Registration – report by Jennifer Presley

o  Registered 1,000 people on the first day of summer registration.

o  Next year, will look at registration on the first day of school registration. It was chaotic this year with close to 1,000 people registering on August 20, 2012.

·  Open House – PTSO Budget was approved.

New Business:

·  E-Learning Day will occur later this semester. Students will have advanced notice of studies required for that day.

·  Paul Demarco Report –

o  Grant Money – Grant money has been designated for HHS and will be used for our Library Juice Bars.

o  State Educational Funds – are headed in the right direction. Hopefully there will be no proration for the first time in years.

o  Important Hoover Seminar on September 18th at 6:00 p.m. at Simmons Middle School on Synthetic Marijuana and Bath Salts. This is an emerging problem that is extremely dangerous.

o  Start Date of school –

o  Mr. Hulin:

·  Extra 2 weeks of preparation was bonus for administration

·  Extra teacher work days very beneficial

·  Random days off from school make the curriculum smoother

·  Biggest hurdle was late notice of the August 20th start date.

·  For HHS, adding 6 minutes per day to the school year with an E-Learning Day has not been difficult.

o  Paul Demarco:

·  The State Legislature is discussing school start date next year – whether it will be August 20th again (with the focus being for state tourism dollars) or whether it will be another date.

·  A bill is being introduced that will allow school systems to decide school start date.

·  Fall Grant Cycle forms are due September 26th. An email will go out to faculty and forms will be places in the Teacher Work Area. We have about $3500 designated for this cycle.

·  Teacher Recruitment – the PTSO will recruit teachers to join the PTSO for $5.00.
