AP Environmental Science Summer Assignment

Welcome to AP Environmental Science! The major topics of the class are as follows:
Energy Systems and Resources – atmosphere, soil, groundwater, and geology
The Living World – ecosystems and cycles
Populations – demographics, dynamics and growth
Land and Water Use – agriculture, forestry, mining, fishing and global economics
Energy Resources and Consumption – fossil fuels, nuclear energy, conservation and consumption
Pollution – types of pollution and its impact, waste disposal
Global Change – ozone, global warming, loss of biodiversity
This summer assignment will give you a brief overview of all of the topics we will go over this year by looking at some of the associated prerequisites and math calculations. Over the course of the year we will learn more about the science and social issues associated with each of the topics. There are four parts to the summer assignment, which in total should take you no more than 4-5 hours.
If you have any questions about the assignment, feel free to email me at I may be out of town periodically so allow a few days for a response, and do not wait until the last minute. The summer assignment will count for a significant portion of your first nine weeks grade. All work turned in must be your own. The assignment will be graded as follows:
1. E-mail Me and join our class wikispace (30 points) Due by July 28th.
a. E-mail me with the following information:
- Brief introduction
- What you think I need to know as your teacher to help you be successful in this course (15 pts)
* This email will help me to make a contact list for your class, so use an email address that you can access throughout the year
b. Go to freemansapes.wikispaces.com and request to join by clicking on “Join” at the top of the screen. (15 pts)
2. Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills – See attached list and directions; a quiz over this information will take place the first week of class. (100 points)
3. Math Problems (70 points) Due the first day of school.
Don’t worry, you learned how to do this type of math in elementary school. If you get stuck, email me J
- 5 points for setting up the problem, 5 points for the answer
4. Watch the video “Home” from youtube.com (100 points) Due the first day of school.

I will also put up a link at freemansapes.wikispaces.com. The video should be 1:33:18 in length. Note that you can choose various languages if you are an English as a Second Language Learner. Fill out the attached graphic organizer as directed. 50 of the 100 pts available are earned for your parent’s signature, so make sure you have them sign the sheet after you watch the video. FOR 30 EXTRA POINTS, have them watch it with you. Please be honest; I make frequent parental contact.
