Course Description:Students are provided with periodic informal reading assessments to determine individual reading fluency and comprehension levels. Instruction will cover the components of a balanced reading program. Informational text, novels, biographies, reader’s theatre, and poetry will be explored. Emphasis will be placed on fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and analytical reading. Literature studies, written expression, oral speaking and arts appreciation are integrated to broaden reading experiences. Some of the selected reading correlates with the 6th grade social studies program. The teaching of Common Core Standards is required in all lessons. A variety of approaches and multiple efforts are made to engage all learners.

Tips for Success: Students will use a literary response journal for note taking.Use of notes,handouts, materials, and anchor charts are used as references to learn the material. Students should use their daily agendas, folders, and binder to organize themselves for optimum learning.

Classwork:May consist of participation, daily work, home reading log, varied assignments, quizzes, tests

Projects:Individual and/or group projectsmay be assigned throughout the year. Students will learn how to balance their time to complete projects by the due date.

Homework:Homework isto be completed and turned in at the beginning of the next class period, unless otherwise stated by the teacher.The completion of homework counts toward the overall grade.

Tests and Quizzes: Test and quiz formats may consist of multiple choice, true/false, short answer,and/or a combination of the above.Tests and quizzes will vary in point value.

Grading Scale:

A = 90-100%

B = 80-89.9%

C = 70-79.9%

D = 60-69.9%

F = Below 60%

Late Work Policy:Policies will be set based on individual student needs concerninglate work. It is at the instructor’s discretion to accept/not accept late work. Late work can impact grades.

Tardy, Attendance and Make-Up Policy:Students are considered tardy if they are not at their seat ready to work at the beginning of class. Students are responsible for obtaining the make-up work following an absence.

Guidelines for Success:

*Homework and class participation are part of the overall earned grade.

*Come to class with sharpened pencils, erasers, and/or lead.

*Cell phones (Turned off) will be stored in the class bucket or lockers. Students who do not follow directions will have their cell phones turned into the office.

*Food and drink are only allowed when the teacher gives permission.

*Use time in between classes to use the bathroom and get drinks.

*Personal music players and iPods will not be allowed in class, unless special permission is granted.

*Cheating and plagiarism is not tolerated.

*Show respect for school property. Clean up after yourself.

*Work and learn cooperatively.

*Students who complete work, are cooperative and follow school/class rules will be rewarded. Students who need frequent reminders will receive consequences.

*Birthdays-You may bring a small wrapped treat or share pencils with classmates. No cakes or cupcakes!

Need Help? Mrs. Kelly is available to assist with learning needs. Ask for individual help! Use study hour to obtain extra assistance and complete homework. At NPA, everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
