Bottle Set Lab
Special Equipment:
Glass plates or spot plates
Purpose:
to determine the identity of 12 unknown solutions, primarily through solubility behaviors
This experiment is to give you some experience in setting up a logical attack of a problem and then carrying it through. It will also give you the opportunity to make extensive use of resource materials to find out about reactions between certain ion species. A knowledge of solubility products, complex ions, and qualitative analysis will be helpful.
Procedure:
Take to your instructor 12 clean dropper bottles numbered from 1 through 12. They will be filled in some random fashion with the solutions listed. It is your job to determine which solution is in each bottle. In order to do so, you may mix them with each other, use color analysis, odor, universal indicator paper, or flame tests. You may NOT use any other chemicals.
Solutions:

Questions:
1. Devise a flowchart by which you separate each positive ion from the others in a mixture that you knew contained: Ba(NO3)2, Zn(NO3)2, Pb(NO3)2, AgNO3, and NaNO3.
2. Give the formula for a substance which would form a precipitate:
WITH / BUT NOT WITHBaCl2 / CoCl2
CoCl2 / BaCl2
Pb(NO3)2 / AgNO3
Na2CO3 / NaOH
NaOH / NH4OH
3. Devise a flowchart by which you separate each negative ion from the others in a mixture you knew contained: Na2SO4, NaCl, Na2S, NaOH, and NaNO3.
Initial Observations of the 12 Solutions
Record the initial color, odor, pH, etc. of each of your 12 solutions.
