TESTING – Smarter Balanced

I think teachers do not really hear what I’m saying, or do not believe what I am saying can possibly be the truth!

We always want our students to do well on tests. We lose sleep trying to figure out how to reach each student so that they will have learned all they needed to do well.

We lose sleep and get cranky trying to figure out how to get all the must have curriculum to fit into too short a time.

We quietly remember not to say what we think about the powers that be that keep changing our curriculum by taking concepts out of the order we know… and let us know at the last minute.

Grades 3-5 have an online test.

Now comes the part I’m not sure I’m clear about… This year’s online test is NOT primarily a test of what your students have learned. It is a test of the district’s Internet. It is a test to show the test-maker which questions are valid, and to get all the bugs it still contains to do their thing.

When a class comes to be tested, everyone does the best they can. Eventually everyone gets tested. Don’t get all excited if things go wrong with the computers, the district isn’t. When we called up to say one of the teachers hadn’t been able to test, guess what they said. They said they were having so much trouble with the Internet that most schools weren’t able to test at all!!!

So relax!! Take several deep breaths. The district is having a lot of problems that are not our fault, and over which we have no control. This year there is no end-of the-year state validation of what students’ learned.
