PHED- Beginning Racquetball 143A

Required Textbook: Racquetball Mastering the Basics with the Personalized Sports Instruction System (2001) Michael Metzler

Course Description:An introductory level course emphasizing beginning racquetball skills, rules and strategies. Analysis of techniques and development of personal skills combined with tactical game appreciation.

Course Objectives:At the completion of the course students will:

  1. Develop a knowledge and understanding of entry level proficiency in the basic skills required to play the game of racquetball. Academic credit 1 unit.
  1. Develop knowledge of the techniques, rules, and strategy, etiquette and safety regulations of the game.
  1. Increase their awareness of the value of racquetball for developing and maintaining one’s lifetime physical fitness goals.
  1. Be able to participate in racquetball as a lifetime sport.
  1. Develop knowledge and understanding of proper sportsmanship and positive social contact in any competitive situation.

Equipment:Each student is required to provide their own racquet and 2 cans of balls.Safety eye goggles are highly recommended.

Course Content:Attending class and being on time are extremely important. Improving physical fitness requires regular participation in class activities. Skill acquisition is based on a scope and sequence approach to learning and is developed through practice. Failure to attend class regularly may hinder one’s ability to obtain certain required performance levels. In case of absence, you will be held accountable for all work missed. Athletic clothing and shoes are required. Students must wear racquet safety straps and protective eye goggles at all time during class.
