Student Assessment Guide

Competency Name: Verify compliance and functionality of appliances

Competency Code: J109A

Competency Purpose:

This competency provides the methods and criteria for ensuring a person has achieved the levels of performance in the critical skills related to the installation, maintenance, repair , fault finding, testing and commissioning of refrigeration, air-conditioning and appliances . This competency shall be undertaken only after the successful completion of all underpinning curriculum knowledge and skills, and the work performance reports for all competency units in the Certificate III Electrotechnology appliance servicing , indicate that relevant work is routinely being carried out autonomously and to requirements.

Competency Assessment:

The assessment for this competency is graded and is recorded as PASS or FAIL. A ‘FAIL’ will be awarded to students that:

  • are deemed ‘not yet competent’ by the supervisor,
  • work live,
  • work in a manner deemed to be unsafe or dangerous.

The centre which is responsible for the competency manages the setting of the assessment events which are used to determine your result.

All assessment events are marked locally. To gain an overall pass, you must pass each assessment event listed below.

Assessment Event Name.

THEORY TEST

INSTALL and COMMISSION PRACTICAL TEST

REFRIGERATION / AIR-CONDITIONING FAULT FINDING PRACTICAL TEST

ELECTRICAL FAULT FINDING PRACTICAL TEST

Assessment Events – Additional information.

Part 1 – Theory Test

Event Name: THEORY TEST

Event Type:Theory Test

Timing: Prior to Practical Test

Duration: 60 minutes

Types of Items: Short answer descriptive, multiple choice, diagrammatic, calculations and problem solving.

Coverage: Critical theoretical knowledge of sections 1, 2 and 4 of the content summary.

Conditions: Conducted in theory room under test conditions. Non-programmable calculators may be used. The test will be locally set and administered.

Part 2 – Install & Commission Test

Event Name: INSTALL & COMMISSION PRACTICAL TEST

Event Type: Practical Test.

Timing: After Theory Test

Duration: 2 hours

Type of Items: Practical, with short answer questions.

Coverage: Pumping down, pressure/leak testing, evacuation, charging refrigerant,. Following relevant Codes, Acts, regulations and Safe working practices.

Conditions: Conducted in workshop under test conditions. The test will be locally set and administered.

Part 3 – Fault finding practical test

Event Name: REFRIGERATION & APPLIANCE FAULT FINDING PRACTICAL TEST

Event Type: Practical Test

Timing:After theory test

Duration: 90 minutes

Types of Items: Practical, with short answer questions

Coverage: Test, fault – find and repair two refrigeration / Air-conditioning & appliance systems operating with a fault, following relevant codes, acts, regulations and safe working practices.

Conditions: Conducted in workshop under test conditions. The test will be locally set and administered.

Part 4 – Electrical fault finding practical test

Event Name: ELECTRICAL FAULT FINDING PRACTICAL TEST

Event Type: Practical test

Timing: After theory test

Duration: 60 minutes

Coverage: Following relevant codes, acts, regulations and safe working practices;

  1. Bench test and fault find singlephase motors complete with starting and protection devices.
  2. Test, fault find and disconnect supply, replace faulty control and reconnect supple to a refrigeration / air-conditioning system operating with an ‘electrical type’ fault.

Conditions:Conducted in workshop under test conditions. The test will be locally set and administered.
