SAFETY BRIEFING NOTE–102018
Cardinal Rules
Background
As you will have read from last week’s briefing note – our H&S Policy refers to some cardinal rules on safety which each and every employee, irrespective of their grade or role in the company is expected to adhere to. It seems timely that we remind ourselves what these commitments are.
CARDINAL RULES OF SAFETY
1.Integral employees and sub-contractors are required to always:
Observe the safe work procedures of these tasks that could result in a serious accident (the “Severe Six”)
- Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures
Never begin work on equipment without isolating all hazardous energy (not just electrical energy)
- Comply with all electrical safety procedures
Never work on electrical equipment without following all proper electrical safety procedure requirements as defined by our Safe Systems of Work (SSoW)
- Follow safe requirements for working at heights, including the use of ladders
Never improperly use ladders, lifts or scaffolds and never work on roofs without proper fall protection
- Comply with confined space or other work requiring a permit
Never perform these types of high‐hazard work without proper training and a permit where required (e.g. hot work, confined spaces)
- Follow all Integral safe driving requirements (as per handbook).
Never drive while text messaging or while e‐mailing on mobile devices. It is strongly recommended that even with hands free that you find a safe place to park in order to call or check messages.
- Comply with machine guarding requirements
Never remove or bypass safety guards on moving machinery. Ensure all guards are re‐installed properly after maintenance is complete
7.Act on your duty to speak up when you see something unsafe
Never watch or participate in an unsafe act being performed. Speak up to stop the job, or alert your supervisor immediately to the unsafe condition.
8.Understand the hazards of each job and use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) every time it is required
Never start a job without first identifying the safety hazards, and never perform work requiring PPE without using the appropriate equipment each and every time
9.Get proper approvals for safely bringing a contractor on site
Never bring a contractor on site without following proper Contractor Safety procedures
10.Report all work‐related injuries immediately to your supervisor, regardless of severity
Never wait and see if a minor strain, contusion or other injury at work becomes consequential before reporting it to your supervisor. Many “minor” injuries lead to major injuries if not properly addressed right away.
