Cell City Project Rubric.

Analogy reasoning 3 pts each = 21

Representation 3 pts each = 21

Creativity 10 pts

Appearance 5 pts

On time and complete 4 pts

TOTAL 60 points

Analogy reasoning:

3/3 / 2/3 / 0/3
The cell part and city part do have a relevant common structural and/or functional characteristic.
Example:
An airplane is like a car because they both move and produce CO2 / The relationship between the cell part and city part is questionable, and the supporting reasoning is flawed.
Example:
A student is like a book, because they both read. / The relationship between the cell part and city part is illogical or not explained
Examples:
Mars is like a jellybean, because it’s red.
Genes are like computer programs

Representation:

3/3 / 2/3 / 0/3
The city part combines features of both the cell part and city part.
Example:
A transport vesicle analogy that can move. / The city part is recognizable
Example:
A model factory has a smokestack. / The city part is totally unrecognizable, or missing,
Example:
Is that city hall? I thought it was a pterodactyl.

Creativity (10):

0 / 5-6 / 7-8 / 9 / 10
Stick figure drawings on notebook paper, etc. / 2d Sketch, or digital representation. Color. / A creative project. A model, video, poem, or just about anything you want. / Over the top. Stands out.
Demonstrates analogy clearly and insightfully.

Appearance (5):

0 / 3 / 4 / 5
There’s some issues with the product (a sketch on wrinkled paper, a video with lots of dead air, etc…) / The product is generally well put together. A few minor defects or oversights don’t hide the fact it’s well done. / An attention to detail has resulted in a finished product that is neat, well constructed, and has some aesthetic quality.

Models:

Models or representations may take any appropriate form in any medium, from a colored pencil sketch to a music video. Creativity in construction is encouraged. The model, in whatever form it takes, must include a part for each of the cell parts.

Analogies:

Along with your model, you will submit a list of analogies between cell parts and the city parts you represented them with. Each analogy should take the following form

A city part is like a cell part because…

Organelle
/ What part of a city has a similar function as the organelle?
/ What would this structure look like? / What do the organelle and its analogy have in common?
nucleus
lysosome
mitochondria
endoplasmic reticulum
vacuole
(plant)
cell wall
(plant)
chloroplast
(plant)
cell membrane
golgi apparatus
