JOB DESCRIPTION:
JOB TITLE: FGM Prevention Caseworker and Trainer (professionals)
HOURS: 28 hours per week
SALARY: £22,618 per annum
Equivalent of £29,080 full time - NJC’s Scale SO1 Column 29(plus Inner London Weighting and annual Manor Gardens Welfare Trust’s cost of living increases)
CONTRACT:2 years with possibility of extension dependant on renewal of service contract (with 6 month probation period)
LOCATION: London Borough of Newham, exact location to be confirmed
JOB SUMMARY:To take a lead role in delivering the FGM Prevention Service in the London Borough of Newham (in accordance with the terms and targets set out in the service contract). This will include delivering individual casework advocacy and support groups to women who have undergone FGM, organising and delivering training on FGM to professionals, supporting professionals to protect girls at risk and developing and managing a FGM Steering Group.
RESPONSIBLE TO:Project Manager, Health Advocacy Project, Manor Gardens Centre
LIAISON WITH:Volunteers, statutory services (health, social care, police, criminal justice system), relevant partners at the London Borough of Newham, including the Newham Domestic and Sexual Violence Partnership Board, community and voluntary groups.
DUTIES:
- To manage referrals to the service, provide one-to-one casework to women who have undergone FGM, including referrals to specialist servicesand the criminal justice system and empowerment and support to protect their daughters from the practice. This may include some early morning / evening work to provide an accessible service.
- To organise and co-facilitate support groups for women who have undergone FGM.
- To organise and deliver training to relevant statutory professionals on FGM and protecting girls, including maternity services, health visitors, GPs, social care and schools.
- To develop, implement and manage a FGM Steering Group for relevant individuals, organisations and agencies in Newham (quarterly).
- To support community members, FGM Survivors and professionals to raise safeguarding concerns with the relevant statutory agencies and take immediate and appropriate steps when an individual is at risk of serious harm.
- To work in partnership with other staff and manage a team of volunteers and community champions who will support service delivery.
- To undertake necessary administrative tasks, including dealing with and monitoring petty cash.
- To collect and record appropriate data for monitoring and evaluating the service in line with the service contract.
- Work within and promote the Health and Safety, Child Protection and Vulnerable Adults practices of Manor Gardens Centre at all times.
- Abide by and actively promote Manor Gardens Centre’s Equal Opportunities Policy and all other policies in force in the carrying out of all responsibilities, including attending regular supervisions and appraisals.
- Be aware of the Centre’s aims and objectives and treat all service-users, beneficiaries, staff, volunteers and visitors with respect, dignity and consideration.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:
- Experience of providing one-to-one casework / support to women who have undergone FGM and a proven ability to empower women to challenge the practice.
- Excellent knowledge of the practice of FGM; including its health, legal and safeguarding implications and the relevant specialist services available.
- Experience of facilitating support groups.
- Experience of developing, organising and delivering training for professionals on FGM and related issues.
- Excellent understanding of child protection and safeguarding procedures.
- Experience of multi-agency working and the ability to develop successful partnerships.
- Experience of working with and supporting volunteers.
- Excellent organisational, interpersonal, team-working and problem-solving skills.
- Proven ability to work on own initiative.
