6. Arrival and transport
The Hong Kong International Airport (http://www.hongkongairport.com) is located about 28 km from Tsimshatsui (downtown Kowloon). Taxis are readily available at the arrival terminal, and fares to Kowloon are approximately HKD 230 (USD 30). The most convenient way to get to the hotel is to take a taxi. Trains on the Airport Express Link to Kowloon cost around HKD 100 (USD 13) for single journey. Participants may also like to check the respective hotel websites for possible shuttle services between hotel and the Airport Express Kowloon station / Airport.
7. Money and credit card information
Hong Kong’s currency is the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD). Notes are issued in denominations of HKD 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 (please avoiding changing 1,000 notes as they recently become unpopular to some shops because of counterfeit notes). One dollar is equal to 100 cents. Coins come in denominations of 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, 1 dollar, 2 dollars,
5 dollars and 10 dollars.
Hong Kong Dollars can be readily exchanged at banks, hotels and authorized
money-changers. All major currencies are generally accepted. One US Dollar is approximately 7.7 Hong Kong Dollars.
Traveller’s Cheques can be cashed from the banks in Hong Kong. Banking hours are from 0900 to 1700 hours on weekdays (Monday - Friday). Participants arriving during the weekends are advised to change some money at the airport.
Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants and many shops. Most popular are Visa, MasterCard, Diner and American Express.
8. Electricity
The electricity in Hong Kong is 220 V / 50 Hz, and type G plug (below) is usually used. Most sockets are 3-rectangular-pin sockets and many hotels provide adaptors for electrical appliances. Please bring your own adaptor if you want to use your laptops.
9. weather and Climate
Hong Kong has a sub-tropical climate, rather warm and humid in May under the increasing influence of the southwest monsoon, with sunshine and showers equally likely. Temperatures will be in the range of 24 – 28 °C, and mean daily rainfall around 10 mm. Latest weather forecasts are available at the HKO website (http://www.weather.gov.hk), or the WMO weather app ‘MyWorldWeather’ which is available on both iPhone and Android devices (http://worldweather.wmo.int/).
