Unit 5 Writing Assignment

Thinking about myself first? Thinking about others first? That is a tough question to put in front of society today. With all of the social pages like Facebook and You Tube as well as the new craze called "Selfies" one really needs to wonder how we got to this point. So which of the two do I think is more important? Me or you?

Yes I most certainly think we should put ourselves before others. In the bible their a few verses id like to share about selflessness and putting others before ourselves. In Philippians 2:3 it says Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Another one is Philippians 2:4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. And last of all Luke 6:35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.

I also want to add share a real life story where selflessness and bravery resulted in saving a life.

On April 7, 2010, Julien Duret was strolling New York’s South Street Seaport with his girlfriend when he saw something fall into the water. At first he thought it was a doll, but then realized it was a baby. In an instant he stripped down and dove into the filthy, freezing East river. Reaching her first, Duret handed the unresponsive child to her father, who was then lifted to safety. Once out of the water, young Bridget Anderson opened her eyes. Anderson’s father praised Duret as ‘the first man in the water’.Back water’. Back on the pier, onlookers shed their dry clothes and gave them to the freezing Duret. He said he was ‘glad to help’ and went on his way. Only later did he realize the rescue had captured the hearts of New Yorkers, who were desperate to find the “Mystery Frenchman.” Once discovered, the humble engineer finally relented to an interview, saying ‘he’d never done anything like this before”.

It makes one think how might this have ended for the baby girl if that man had not put her needs before his own. If that man had been walking by, saw the child and continued walking because he didn’t want to get wet, the baby’s life surely would have ended that day. But the man showed extreme selflessness. And because of that he saved the baby girls life.

Dr Salk(when did you start talking about this guy) was an amazing man. Many like him work tirelessly to give to and serve their fellow man. If people did not put themselves last and everyone else first we would be without many of the things in life that we have. Holding the door for someone whose hands are full , letting someone else go first in a game or helping with chores without being asked may not be as important as a life saving vaccine but it could be very important to the person you put first instead of yourself.

If this is a formal essay then don’t talk about things that people might not agree with for instance the bible references… that would be good for an article type essay and would not be necessary for this to explain your point. Then you should bring in some things about phycology and how the brain makes you think this way and why. That would get some attention to the essay. And to site works go to google and search cite builder and it should give you something to help build it. AND DO NOT COPY WORD FOR WORD EVEN IF AND ARTICLE!!!!! ILLEAGLE!!!!! And also if you’re going to use the article put it in your own words. But still cite it.

P.S. I do not know how to cite things

I found and copied the story about the baby girl at this site
