Astudentmustmaintaina"C"orbetterinALLpre-requisite,co-requisite,andnursingcoursesaswellasmaintainanoverall2.0GradePointAveragetograduateandbeeligibletowritetheNationalCouncilLicensureExaminationforPracticalNurses(NCLEX-PN/VN).Allvocationalnursingcourses(VNSG)requireaminimumscoreof75foragradeof“C”.

A.StepTwo.CompletetheVocationalNursingProgramApplication.(Applicants mustcompleteStepOnebeforestartingStepTwo.)Thefollowingformsshouldbecompletedandsubmittedwiththerequireddocumentation:

3.TSI Scores (unlessthestudentisexempt). TSI Scores are typically located onthestudent’sofficial collegetranscripts.

B.StepThree. Pre-AdmissionHESIAdmissionAssessmentExam(A2)andOrientation

1.Tobeconsideredforadmission,studentsarerequiredtocompletetheHESIAdmissionAssessment(A2)Exam.Theexamisacomputer-based,timed,multiplechoiceexamthatevaluatesyourcomprehensioninfivesubjectareas:math,readingcomprehension,vocabularyandreadingknowledge,andanatomyandphysiology.Studentsareallowedtwoattemptspersemestertoearnapassingscoreontheexam. Passing scores include1) a cumulativescoreof70%orhigherand2)areadingcomprehensionscoreof74.5%orhigher.StudentsscoringlessthantheminimumrequirementswillbeplacedonanalternatelistforadmissionnecessitatingfurtherreviewofeligibilitybytheStandardsCommittee.StudentsmustsubmittheAdmissionAssessment(A2)examscorereportwiththeirapplicationtotheVocational NursingProgram.

Peer-reviewedresearchfindings[2]indicateHESIAdmissionAssessmentscoresarevalidpredictorsofstudentsuccessandcanthereforeassisteducatorsintheselectionprocess,andassiststudentsinidentifyingandremediatingacademicweaknessespriortoenteringaprogram.Theresultsoftheexamwillbecalculatedaspartoftheadmissionratingscale.Thefeefortheexam isapproximately$50.

ORIENTATION SESSION

Applicantsmustattendan Orientation Session beforethe deadline for the submission of program applications.

AfteracceptanceintotheVocationalNursingProgram,studentsarerequiredtohaveaphysicalexaminationattheirownexpensebythephysicianornursepractitioneroftheirchoice.ImmunizationsareavailableatthePortArthurHealthDepartmentforthosewhodonothavehealthinsurance.The Health Data form will be uploaded by the student to CastleBranch by the first day of class.

AnewregulationoftheTexasDepartmentofHealthrequiresthateachstudentcompletetheHepatitisBvaccinationseriespriortocontactwithpatientsorshowserologicconfirmationofimmunitytothevirus.Ittakessixmonthstocompletethethree-shotseriessostudentswhohavenothadthevaccinationsshouldgetthemassoonaspossible.

IMMUNIZATIONRECORDS

AfteracceptanceintotheVocationalNursingProgram,studentsarerequiredto uploadCOPIESoftheirshotrecords to CastleBranch:

  1. MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
  2. Tdap - Tetanus-diphtheria-pertussisbooster(withinlast10years)
  3. Hepatitis B(3shotseries)–All three injections must be taken within a 6-month period according to Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines.
  4. Varicella/Chickenpox(documentationofhavingthedisease, vaccination or serologic confirming immunity)
  5. Tb -T-Spot Blood Draw; TB Gold; Tb Skin Test(withinlast6months).
  6. SeasonalInfluenzaVaccination(documentationfromphysicianifunabletohavetheInfluenzavaccination)
  7. Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination(Required by the campus if under age 22)

BACTERIALMENINGITISVACCINATION

BacterialMeningitisVaccinationisrequiredforallnewstudentsunderage22.ThisincludesALLtransferstudentsandstudentsthathavetakeneitherafallorspringsemesterofffromcollege.Allfirst-timefreshman,transferstudents,andstudentswhohavetakenaleaveofabsencefromschoolineitherafallorspringsemestermusthavereceivedthisvaccinationduringthefive-yearperiodimmediatelyprecedingandatleast10dayspriortothefirstdayofthesemesterenrolledorre-enrolled.

HIVSTATUS

EffectiveSeptember1,1991,theStateofTexasBill,HB7,imposedonallTexashealthcareprofessionalsvariousrequirementsdesignedtopreventthetransmissionofHIVfrom healthcareworkerstotheirclients.Underthislaw,healthcareworkersinclude"individualsinthecourseoftrainingoreducationalprograminthehealthprofessions."Thus,thelawappliestoallthenursingstudentsatLamarStateCollege-PortArthurduringthetimetheyareinvolvedinclientcare.

ItiseachLamarStateCollege-PortArthur’sstudent’sresponsibilitytounderstandthelegalandprofessional/ethicalramificationsofthelawandtocomplywiththelaw'srequirements.Ingeneral,thelawrequiresthatallhealthcareworkersadheretoStandardPrecautionsandthatindividualswithexudativelesions(drainingsores)orweepingdermatitis(reddenedareasthatleakclearfluid)refrainfromdirectclientcareandthehandlingofclientequipmentanddevicesusedininvasiveproceduresuntiltheconditionresolves.ToinsurethatallstudentsarefamiliarwithStandardPrecautions,areviewofStandardPrecautionsisincludedforallstudentsinthenursingprogram.

EffectiveSeptember1,2013,TexasSenateBill1058amendedSection2,Subsection(c),Section301.2511oftheTexasOccupationsCodewhichcontainstheNursePracticeAct(NPA)tostate,“TheboardbyruleshalldevelopasystemforobtainingcriminalhistoryrecordinformationforapersonacceptedforenrollmentinanursingeducationalprogramthatpreparesthepersonforinitiallicensureasaregisteredorvocationalnursebyrequiringthepersontosubmittotheboardasetoffingerprintsthatmeetstherequirementsofSubsection(a).Theboardmaydevelopasimilarsystemforanapplicantforenrollmentinanursingeducationalprogram.Theboardmayrequirepaymentofafeebyapersonwhoisrequiredtosubmitasetoffingerprintsunderthissubsection.”

ThebackgroundcheckprocessisalsorequiredbytheclinicalfacilitieswhichprovidedirectpatientcareexperiencetoLSCPAstudents.ThisensuresuniformcompliancewithJointCommissionstandardspertainingtohumanresourcemanagement.Successfulcompletionofthebackgroundcheckprocessdoesnotguaranteelicensureoremploymentaftergraduation.

InordertobefullyacceptedintotheVocationalNursingProgramatLamarStateCollege-PortArthur,thestudentmustsubmitdocumentationfromtheTexasBoardofNursingstatingthestudenthaseitheraclearbackgroundorwillbeeligibletositstateboards.Theapproximatecostofthebackgroundcheckis$49.Additionalinformationandinstructionsaresenttostudentsreceivingacceptanceoralternatelistlettersinagivenenrollmentperiod.Pleaserefertopage9ofthisapplicationformoreinformationregardingDeclaratoryOrderProcess.

MALPRACTICEINSURANCE

Studentsarerequiredtomaintainmalpracticeinsuranceduringthenursingprogram.Atthetimeofacceptanceastudent must submit a receipt from the LSC-PA Business Office verifying the payment of the required fee (currently $13.00) along with the confirmation of acceptance reply form.

CPRCERTIFICATION

StudentsacceptedintotheVocationalNursingprogramwillberequiredtoobtaincurrentCPRcertificationthroughtheAmericanHeartAssociation(AHA)orAmericanRedCross(ARC).OnlyAHAorARCHealthcareProviderofAdult,ChildandInfantCPRthatincludeahands-oncheckoffwillbeaccepted.StudentswillhaveanopportunitytosignupforCPRcertificationwithLSCPAInstructorsatthebeginningofeachFall, Spring, or Summer I semesters.

FINANCIALAID

FinancialAidconsistsofdonationsandseveralprogramsfundedbyfederalandstategovernmentstohelpcollegestudentsdefrayexpenseswhileattendingcollege.ThetypesoffinancialaidavailableatLamarStateCollege-PortArthurare:

  1. Scholarships. Moneyawardedtocoveraportionofastudent’sexpensesthroughfundsdonatedtothecollege.
  2. Grants. Moneyawardedthatisnotrepayable.
  3. WorkStudy. Moneythestudentearnsthroughemploymentatthecollege.
  4. StaffordStudentLoans. Studentloansthatmustberepaidandareavailabletoundergraduatestudents.

Completion of theVocational Nursing Program doesNOT guaranteethat agraduatemaytaketheNational CouncilLicensureExamination (NCLEX-PN/VN). TheTexasBoard ofNursing maydisqualifyan applicant from obtaining Licensure.TheTexasBoard ofNursing,333Guadalupe, Suite3-460, Austin, TX78701-394, (512) 305-7400, hasidentifiedcertain circumstancesthat mayrender apotential candidateineligiblefor licensureasavocational nursein theStateof Texas. TheBoard providesindividualstheopportunitytopetition theBoard for aDeclaratoryOrder asto their eligibilityin accordance with theNursing PracticeAct.
