Job title: Deputy Early Years Leader

Employed by: St Paul’s Playgroup

Accountable to: Playgroup committee

Line manager: Early Years Teacher

Responsible for: The Deputy Early Years Leader will work with the Early Years Teacher to ensure the welfare of the children and the efficient day to day running of the playgroup. This will be in accordance with the legal and statutory requirements, aims and policies of St Paul’s Playgroup. In the absence of the Early Years Teacher the deputy assumes full responsibility.

Responsible to: The Early Years Teacher and the Playgroup Committee.

Administrative Duties: To assist the Early Years Teacher and staff in keeping a daily register of and relevant records, including registration documents, accident and incident book details.

To contribute to planning, undertake observations and assessment and to evaluate children’s progress, keeping learning journeys up to date both Tapestry and journals.

Staff Duties:

  • To deputise for the Early Years Teacher when required.
  • To provide a high quality of care, to assist the Early Years Teacher in ensuring the staff are properly deployed and offer appropriate stimulation to support the children.
  • To help with supervision of the session, and any special activities and events.
  • To challenge sex, class, racial, and religious discrimination.
  • To attend relevant training and to keep up to date training for First Aid and Child Protection when necessary.
  • To liaise with parents regarding the progress of their child.
  • To keep up to date with the latest ideas in childcare through appropriate training courses and relevant publications.
  • To attend staff meetings, take the lead in safeguarding and staff appraisals.
  • To contribute to policies.

Duties towards children:

  • To support all children in the setting, offering appropriate learning experiences in line with the EYFS.
  • To be a positive role model.
  • To help with organising a wide range of stimulating and safe activities throughout the session, including play to promote positive attitudes, behaviour and equal opportunities.
  • To be aware of the differing needs of a wide range of children and to be able to meet those needs.
  • To help supervise and support the children, ensuring the correct adult to child ratio.
  • To ensure unacceptable behaviour is dealt with in accordance with the policies and procedures of the setting.
  • To ensure that the playgroup is a safe environment for children, equipment is safe, standards of hygiene are high, and safety procedures are implemented at all times.
  • To assist with toileting, nappy changing and personal care of the children.

Other Duties:

  • To arrive at 8.30am (12.30pm for afternoons) to help set up the activities before opening, and to stay to clear up after session.
  • Check equipment and premises are kept in good order and report and concerns to the Early Years Teacher, helping with the risk assessments.
