Adena Cancer Center Receives Full Accreditation

The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting. This promotes cancer prevention, research, education, and monitoring of comprehensive quality care.Accreditation through the CoC occurs on a triennial basis; and Adena was notified earlier this week it has been fully accredited through the CoC.The survey assesses the cancer program on a multitude of ‘standards’ that are intended to ensure the highest quality care for our patients in areas such as: quality, research, continual goal setting and improvement, and survivorship. The accreditation is a benchmark to ensure we are providing excellent care across the spectrum of a cancer diagnosis, and that Adena’s Oncology program continues to grow and adapt with the ever-changing landscape of cancer care.

Congratulations to the entire Adena Cancer Center team for this achievement. The work everyone put in for the CoC Survey is evident in this result, as well as in the Center’s day-to-day care of our patients. With this accreditation, Adena Cancer Center will be listed on CoC’s website in the, "Find an CoC-Accredited Program" section, making it easier for patients in our region to find close-to-home, comprehensive cancer care. We will also utilize this distinction in upcoming marketing and communication efforts. A CoC designation helps the public immediately recognize our commitment to patient-centered cancer care and quality. Thanks to everyone involved who made this achievement possible. The next survey will take place in July 2017 for the 2014 through 2016 calendar years.

Walk with a Doc Featured

The Chillicothe Gazette ran an article promoting Adena’s Walk with a Doc program. The article promoted the Health System’s vision to improve the health of people in the community, as well as to promote Saturday’s monthly Walk with a Doc event. Walkers meet every third Saturday of the month at Yoctangee Park, and the last Wednesday of the month at the Carlisle Building. During the event, attendees have the opportunity to get active while learning more about their health from an Adena provider.

If you would like to take part in either this Saturday’s walk, or the upcoming Wednesday session, here is more information: The next Walk with a Doc event is Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. in the Easter Seals Shelter House at Yoctangee Park. Dr. Jennifer Davis will lead the walk and discuss health screenings (no pre-registration necessary). June's Wednesday Walk will take place June 29 from 12 to 1 p.m. at the Carlisle Building. It will be led by Podiatrist Dr. John Boyle, who will discuss taking care of your feet, general foot health, and choosing the right shoes. The Wednesday events include a light lunch. If you plan to attend this session, please contact Carolyn Hice at 27778 to be sure you get a lunch. If you would like to lead a session of Walk with a Doc, contact Ruth Bache at 28664.

CMS Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting Program (HIQRP) Hospital Specific Preview Reports

Each week, a new table from the HIQRP Report is included in the CMO Weekly Update to let you know where we stand in relation to our industry peers. This week, the table shows ARMC’s performance on our Excess Days in Acute Care (EDAC) after Hospitalization for AMI and HR Measures. As you can see below, Adena’s performance in this time period is comparable to facilities across the nation.

Population Health

The health of our caregivers is vitally important in their ability to effectively provide the services our patients need, and in keeping the cost of the Health System’s healthcare spend as low as possible. We currently have more than 4,500 members (caregivers and their dependents) who are covered by Adena Care. Five-and-a-half percent of these members are currently diagnosed with diabetes.

There are three important care metrics Adena Care is striving for when it comes to its members with diabetes. Currently, we are not meeting these metrics. They include:

· A1C < 8 (goal = 70% / current = 66%)

· Micro Albumin every 12 months (goal = 84% / current = 82.1%)

· Diabetic Eye Exam every 12 months (goal = 80% / current 50%)

Adena Care is asking for all primary care providers to be aware of these goals; and to encourage your Adena Care patients to have the recommended lab work and testing done at the intervals outlined in the Diabetes Care Guidelines. To also help reach patients in need of updated testing, Population Health’s Nurse Navigators will be contacting our members, and offering navigation assistance when appropriate. If you have suggestions about how Adena Care can enhance its outreach to improve the health of our diabetic members, please contact Adena Care at 2CARE (22273).
