Documentation that proves right to work status

British & European citizens

British citizens, Swiss nationals or a national of a country in the European Economic Area (EEA) you do not need permission to work in the United Kingdom. These countries include:- (see notes below)

Austria / Greece / Netherlands
Belgium / Hungary / Norway *
Bulgaria ! / Iceland * / Poland
Cyprus / Ireland / Portugal
Czech Republic / Italy / Romania !
Denmark / Latvia # / Slovakia
Estonia / Liechtenstein * / Slovenia
Finland / Lithuania / Spain
France / Luxembourg / Sweden
Germany / Malta / Switzerland *

* These countries are not in the EU but have been granted the same rights as EU citizens

! Nationals of Bulgaria and Romania must register with the Home Office and obtain authorisation to work before starting any employment unless they are exempt. (Exemptions are for high skilled workers ie doctors, teachers etc)

# Latvian non-citizen alien passport holders do not have the right to work in the UK and need to apply for a full UK work permit.

You are not restricted on the number of hours work you can offer to a European worker as long as they have complied with the notes above where applicable.

Non-European nationals

Non-Europeans will require a permit or visa in their passport that allows them to work in the UK. Make sure you check the expiry date of the visa.

Non- EU students are permitted to work up to 20 hours a week on their student visa during term-time and full time in vacations. Though it is UWE policy to offer no more than 14 hours during term time.

Acceptable forms of proof to work in the UK

You should photocopy this at interview. You will need to get 1 item from list once OR one of the combinations in 2. Remember that certain workers will need to have / or do so on employment, register with the Home Office.

List 1:

A passport showing that the holder is a British citizen or has a right of abode in the UK (i.e. citizen of an European Union (EU) country). A list of EU countries is stated above. Photocopy the back page and the visa stamp if applicable.

A document showing that the holder is a national of a European Economic Area (EEA) country, or Switzerland, whose nationals have been given the same rights). This must be a passport or national ID card. A list of EEA countries is stated below.

A residence permit issued by the UK to an EEA or Swiss national.

A passport or other document which has an endorsement stating that the holder has current right of residence as a family member of an EEA or Swiss national.

A passport or other travel document endorsed to show that the holder can stay indefinitely in the UK, or has no time limit on their stay.

An Application Registration Card issued by the Home Office to an asylum seeker stating that the holder is permitted to take employment

List 2:

Combination 1

A document giving your permanent national insurance number and your name; P45, P60, NI card or a letter from a government agency.

AND

A full birth certificate issued in the UK including the names of both parents.

OR

A birth certificate issued in the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or Ireland.

OR

A certificate of registration or naturalisation stating that the holder is a British citizen.

OR

A letter issued by the Home Office which indicates that the person named can stay in the UK.

OR

An immigration status document issued by the Home Office with an endorsement that the holder can stay indefinitely in the UK.

OR

A letter or immigration status document indicating that the holder can stay indefinitely in the UK and is able to take employment

Combination 2:

A work permit or other approval to take employment that has been issued by Work Permits UK

AND

A passport or other travel document endorsed to show that the holder is able to stay in the UK and can take employment in the UK.

OR

A letter issued by the Home Office to show that the holder is able to stay in the UK and is able to take work in the UK.

We cannot accept the following as proof of your right to work in the UK:

A home Office standard acknowledgement letter or immigration service letter (IS96W) which states that an asylum seeker can work in the UK.

A letter issued by the Home Office stating that the holder is a British citizen.

A passport describing the holder as a British Dependant Territories citizen which states the holder has a connection with Gibraltar.

A short birth certificate issued in the UK without details of the holder's parents.

A temporary national insurance number beginning with TN or any number that ends with the letter E-Z inclusive.

A driving licence issued by the DVLA.

A bill issued by a financial institution or a utility company.
